New Delhi: In a significant administrative development, the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) has approved the deputation of two Indian Revenue Service (Income Tax) officers to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). The appointments are at the rank of Superintendent of Police (SP) and come at a time when the CBI continues to bolster its core investigation teams with domain specialists.
Vedant Kumar (IRS-IT:2016) Appointed SP, CBI
Vedant Kumar, a 2016-batch IRS officer from the Income Tax cadre, has been appointed as Superintendent of Police (SP) in the CBI for an initial tenure of three years. His tenure will begin from the date he assumes charge, or until further orders, whichever comes earlier.
Kavinder Singh Negi (IRS-IT:2015) Appointed SP, CBI
Likewise, Kavinder Singh Negi, a 2015-batch IRS officer, has also been appointed to the CBI as SP, but for a longer tenure of four years, under similar terms — from the date of assumption of charge or until further orders.
Strengthening CBI’s Investigative Capabilities
The deputation of IRS officers to the CBI is part of a broader government strategy to enhance inter-service collaboration and infuse financial expertise into high-stakes investigations. IRS officers bring with them deep knowledge of tax laws, financial forensics, and white-collar crime detection, making them valuable assets for the CBI in cases related to economic offenses, corruption, and financial fraud.
These appointments are also in line with past practices where officers from the IRS, IPS, IAS, and other Central Services are brought into the CBI on deputation to take up investigative and administrative roles.
