Kerala’s iconic police leader Ms. R. Sreelekha—celebrated as the state’s first woman IPS officer and the first woman to reach the DGP rank—has stepped into an entirely new arena. Five years after retiring from an illustrious 33-year career in public service, she is now contesting the upcoming local body elections from the Sasthamangalam ward in Thiruvananthapuram. The Bharatiya Janata Party has fielded her a year after she formally joined the party, marking an unprecedented development in Kerala’s political landscape.

A Legacy of Firsts: From IPS Trailblazer to Development-Oriented Leadership
Ms. Sreelekha’s career has been defined by landmark achievements. Since joining the Indian Police Service in 1987, she has consistently broken barriers—becoming Kerala’s first woman IPS officer and later, in 2017, the first woman to ascend to the rank of Director General of Police.
Her tenure saw major administrative reforms. As Transport Commissioner, she implemented measures that significantly contributed to reducing road fatalities. Earlier, her fearless operations while on deputation with the Central Bureau of Investigation earned her the title “Raid Sreelekha.” Her leadership across Vigilance, Prisons, Fire & Rescue Services and other key departments reflected a commitment to transparency, modernization and citizen-centric governance.
Stepping Into Politics: A Grassroots-Focused Mission
Speaking about her decision to enter political life, Ms. Sreelekha shared that her candidacy carries a powerful message. “This is historic. Nowhere else has a retired IPS officer been fielded for Panchayat polls. It’s an opportunity to show that the BJP wants a senior-ranking officer to work at the grassroots,” she said.
Her entry comes at a time when the party is pushing to strengthen its presence in Kerala. Senior leaders, including Union Home Minister Mr. Amit Shah, are closely monitoring the local body elections as the BJP aims to boost its vote share and expand its footprint in the state.
Political Stakes: A Key Battle for the BJP in Kerala
The BJP has set an ambitious target of securing 25 percent vote share in the upcoming panchayat polls, seen as a prelude to the state assembly elections. In the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, the BJP-led NDA secured 19.24 percent of Kerala’s votes and achieved its first-ever parliamentary win from Thrissur.
Political analyst Mr. K. P. Sethunath noted that Ms. Sreelekha may face challenges in gaining traction but acknowledged her determination and strong campaign efforts. Meanwhile, CPI(M) State Secretary Mr. M. V. Govindan emphasized that the Left would rely on long-serving candidates with deep grassroots connect.
A Career Built on Service, Reform and Public Trust
Beyond law enforcement, Ms. Sreelekha has made her mark as a writer, columnist and social advocate. Her emphasis on ethical governance and her interventions for women’s safety have left a strong imprint on Kerala’s administrative ethos. Her groundbreaking rise to DGP rank continues to inspire countless young women to pursue careers in policing and public service.
As she now transitions into electoral politics, her journey embodies a blend of bureaucratic excellence and grassroots commitment—positioning her as a significant contender in Kerala’s evolving political environment.
