Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) has returned the proposal sent by the state government for the new director of police (DGP) in the state. The commission has asked the state government whether the directions of the Supreme Court were followed to remove Mukul Goel from the post of DGP before completing the minimum period of two years.
The commission said that in accordance with the Supreme Court order passed on September 22, 2006, for the appointment of DGP in Uttar Pradesh, a meeting was held in the UPSC on June 29, 2021 and a panel of three senior-most IPS officers was sent to the state government. The tenure of the DGP appointed as per the order of the Supreme Court should be at least two years.
Thus, the query by UPSC on the removal of former DGP has thrown a spanner in the selection of the new state police chief in the state.
The UPSC also directed the Uttar Pradesh government to attach the self-attested bio-data of all Indian Police Service (IPS) officers whose names have been included in the list for the appointment of the new DGP, a senior state government officer familiar with the development said.
After shunting Mukul Goel from the post of DGP on May 11, the Uttar Pradesh government had appointed 1988-batch IPS officer DS Chauhan as acting DGP on May 13.
