In a significant development that reinforces accountability and transparency within administrative systems, a special CBI court has formally framed charges against IFS officer Mr. Birendra Chaudhary and his wife in a disproportionate assets case registered four years ago. The move is seen as part of a broader push toward strengthening governance and ensuring ethical standards across public institutions.

CBI Court Moves Ahead With Evidence-Based Action

The case originally began in 2017 when Mr. Chaudhary, then serving as Member-Secretary of the Chandigarh Pollution Control Committee (CPCC), was caught red-handed while allegedly accepting Rs. 1 lakh from a businessman. The complainant stated that after receiving a show-cause notice regarding the revocation of consent to operate his sawmill, he met the officer to present his explanation but was denied a fair hearing.

According to officials, Mr. Chaudhary allegedly demanded a bribe in exchange for not acting on the issued notices. Subsequent searches at his residence led to the recovery of cash and property-related documents. Following these recoveries, a separate case was also registered, eventually forming the basis of the disproportionate-assets charges now moving forward in court.

Profile: Who is IFS Officer Birendra Chaudhary?

Mr. Birendra Chaudhary is a 2000-batch Indian Forest Service (IFS) officer with experience across multiple administrative and environmental regulatory positions. One of his notable postings was as Member-Secretary of the Chandigarh Pollution Control Committee, where he handled matters related to environmental compliance and industrial regulation.

In July 2017, he was arrested by the Central Bureau of Investigation after being accused of taking Rs. 1 lakh from sawmill operators in Chandigarh in exchange for halting regulatory action against them. Investigations revealed additional cash and property documents during raids, leading to serious charges under the Prevention of Corruption Act.

By September 2017, the CBI had filed an extensive 1,500-page chargesheet naming over 25 witnesses. The matter continued progressing through legal channels, culminating in a major development in November 2025 when the CBI court formally framed charges against Mr. Chaudhary and his wife in a disproportionate-assets case.

A Step Forward for Transparency and Administrative Integrity

The court’s decision to frame charges after years of investigation marks a crucial step toward enforcing accountability within public institutions. With legal proceedings now set to advance, the case underscores the importance of probity in public service and the government’s focus on strengthening institutional credibility and citizen trust.
