CBI Raids Punjab Vigilance Bureau; IPS Sharad Satya Chauhan’s Appointment Comes Under Spotlight

Anti-Corruption Agency Searches State Vigilance Headquarters, Triggering Political Storm for AAP Government | Know About IPS Chauhan

Chnadigarh/New Delhi: In an unprecedented development, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) carried out raids at the headquarters of the Punjab Vigilance Bureau, the state’s premier anti-corruption agency, triggering a major political and administrative controversy in Punjab.

According to Indian Express report, the operation has put the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government led by Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann under intense scrutiny, overshadowing its recent efforts to project a strong anti-corruption and governance narrative.

Raids Overshadow Bhagwant Mann’s Shukrana Yatra

The timing of the CBI action is politically significant. Just days earlier, Bhagwant Mann had undertaken a widely publicized ‘Shukrana Yatra’ following the notification of the Jaagat Jot Sri Guru Granth Sahib Satkar (Amendment) Act, 2026, a law aimed at strengthening protections against sacrilege.

The yatra was intended to reinforce the government’s outreach and highlight what it described as landmark legislation. However, the CBI raids have shifted attention away from that initiative and toward allegations involving the state’s own anti-corruption machinery.

AAP Accuses Centre of Misusing Investigative Agencies

Senior AAP leaders have alleged that the BJP-led Central Government is using federal agencies for political purposes ahead of elections.

Aman Arora said the action undermined institutional decorum and federal principles. He argued that if the Centre had received corruption-related complaints, it should have formally informed the Punjab government and allowed it to address the matter internally.

Arora emphasized that while Punjab has zero tolerance for corruption, investigations should follow due process and established protocols.

Series of Controversies Deepens Political Pressure

The raids come amid several other controversies involving the state government, including recent enforcement actions against individuals linked to senior political figures and the arrest of Cabinet Minister Sanjeev Arora.

AAP has also linked the current investigations to broader political tensions, including speculation surrounding some of its Rajya Sabha members.

Meanwhile, Sandeep Pathak approached the Punjab and Haryana High Court, which directed the Punjab government not to take coercive action against him without prior permission from the court.

Vigilance Bureau Faces Serious Credibility Questions

The raids have dealt a major reputational blow to the Punjab Vigilance Bureau, which was established specifically to investigate and prosecute corruption.

CBI teams reportedly searched offices, seized documents, and questioned personnel, placing the functioning and credibility of the bureau under renewed scrutiny.

Officials say repeated leadership changes and administrative disruptions in recent years had already affected morale within the organization.

Sharad Satya Chauhan’s Role Under Focus

The development has also brought attention to Sharad Satya Chauhan, one of the senior-most police officers in Punjab.

A 1994-batch IPS officer, Chauhan was given charge of the Punjab Vigilance Bureau in April 2026 after serving as Special DGP-cum-Managing Director of the Punjab Police Housing Corporation.

Considered a strong contender for the post of Director General of Police (DGP), Chauhan’s appointment had been viewed as a return to a key operational role. Barely weeks into his tenure, the CBI action has placed both his leadership and the bureau’s functioning under intense public attention.

About IPS Chauhan

Mr Chauhan is a highly decorated IPS officer of the Punjab Cadre who currently serves as the Chief Director of the Punjab Vigilance Bureau. Born on 3 March 1968 in Uttar Pradesh, he uniquely transitioned from medicine to law enforcement, graduating as an MBBS gold medalist from Delhi University before topping his IPS batch and formally joining the service in 1993. Over a distinguished three-decade career, he has earned an MA in Police Management, a Ph.D. in bio-terrorism, and the prestigious Police Medal for Meritorious Service.

Dr. Chauhan has held vital leadership roles across the state – including Additional Director General of Police (ADGP) for Traffic and Security, and Managing Director of the Punjab Police Housing Corporation – before his promotion to the rank of full Director General of Police (DGP), making him the senior-most active serving IPS officer in Punjab today.

Broader Administrative and Political Impact

The CBI raids are likely to have significant administrative and political implications. For the Punjab government, the episode presents a challenge to its anti-corruption credentials. For the Vigilance Bureau, it raises questions about internal accountability and institutional integrity.

As investigations continue, the outcome may influence both the state’s political discourse and the future leadership of Punjab’s police establishment.
