New Delhi: The Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC) has accepted the voluntary retirement (VRS) requests of four Indian Revenue Service (Customs & Indirect Taxes) officers. All four officers were serving as Assistant Commissioners at the time of their retirement.
The officers whose VRS has been approved are:
- Samanandha Joseph George
- Ajay M. Shinde
- R. Srinivasan
- Vijay Devdattbhai Shah
While no official reasons have been disclosed regarding their decision to opt for voluntary retirement, the acceptance of their VRS marks a notable development within the IRS (C&IT) cadre.

Role of IRS (Customs & Indirect Taxes) Officers
Officers of the Indian Revenue Service (Customs & Indirect Taxes) play a crucial role in:
- Administration of Goods and Services Tax (GST)
- Customs enforcement and trade facilitation
- Prevention of smuggling and economic offences
- Indirect tax policy implementation
Assistant Commissioners serve as key field-level officers responsible for tax administration, compliance monitoring, and enforcement functions.
Voluntary Retirement in Civil Services
Under the existing service rules, eligible officers can opt for Voluntary Retirement Scheme (VRS) after completing the prescribed years of service. Acceptance of VRS is subject to approval by the competent authority.
Such retirements are processed in accordance with central civil service rules and administrative procedures.
