Patna/Bettiah/Motihari: In a significant step toward strengthening the policing structure in Bihar, the Nitish Kumar-led state government has approved the creation of new IPS-level posts in the Champaran region, paving the way for six Superintendents of Police (SPs) to be deployed across West and East Champaran districts.
The move aims to decentralize the workload of police leadership in the two large and densely populated districts and bring greater efficiency to law enforcement, investigation, and public order.
Bettiah Gets a Senior SP, Rural SP, and City SP
Currently, Bettiah (West Champaran) has a single SP overseeing the entire district, which includes nearly three dozen police stations. Under the new structure:
- The current SP post will be upgraded to Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP).
- Two new posts have been approved: City SP and Rural SP.
- These additional officers will be responsible for supervising police stations in their respective zones.
2011 batch IPS officer Harkishore Rai, DIG of Champaran Range, confirmed the changes, noting that the Rural SP will handle 15 to 20 police stations. This includes responsibilities for law and order, case management, and investigation.
“The burden on police officers will be significantly reduced,” DIG Rai said, adding that deployment for the new Rural SP post will happen soon.
Motihari Next in Line for Police Restructuring
The East Champaran (Motihari) district is also likely to see a similar overhaul. The DIG has sent a proposal to the state government requesting the creation of City SP and Rural SP posts in Motihari as well.
East Champaran is one of the largest districts in Bihar, comprising multiple subdivisions. DIG Rai emphasized that once approved, these additional posts will make policing more focused, localized, and efficient.
Benefits of the New Structure
- Improved administrative control: Each SP will have fewer police stations to manage.
- Better law and order maintenance: Streamlined supervision across urban and rural zones.
- Timely investigation and follow-up: With reduced burden, senior officers can ensure better quality in case handling.
- Enhanced public reach: Citizens will benefit from a more accessible police leadership at the sub-district level.
