In a historic moment for infrastructure development in central India, Chhattisgarh on Saturday completed its first-ever national highway tunnel, a 2.79-kilometre engineering marvel built as part of the Raipur–Visakhapatnam Economic Corridor (NH-130CD). The tunnel is being hailed as a game-changer in the region’s connectivity, trade logistics, and economic landscape.
Built in Record Time by NHAI
Executed by the Abhanpur Project Implementation Unit of the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), the project comprises a twin-tube tunnel, with one side now fully completed. Remarkably, this phase of the tunnel was completed in just 12 months, showcasing NHAI’s project management efficiency and technical prowess.
According to official sources, this tunnel passes through challenging terrain, requiring advanced tunnelling techniques. Once both tubes are operational, the infrastructure will drastically reduce travel time between Raipur (Chhattisgarh) and Visakhapatnam (Andhra Pradesh).
A New Era for Regional Connectivity
More than just a construction achievement, the tunnel is expected to significantly improve logistics and regional trade by connecting three major states—Chhattisgarh, Odisha, and Andhra Pradesh. The corridor will serve as a key freight route, enabling smoother movement of goods and improving industrial productivity across central and eastern India.
The tunnel also aims to foster tourism, socio-economic integration, and market access in regions that have long suffered from inadequate transport networks.
Chief Minister Calls It a ‘Historic Step’
Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Mr. Vishnu Deo Sai applauded the milestone, describing it as a “historic step towards building a prosperous and empowered Chhattisgarh.” He emphasized the long-term benefits of the project:
“The development of road and transport infrastructure is the backbone of the state’s progress. This tunnel will chart a new direction for the people of Chhattisgarh, reducing distances and providing better access to markets and services,” said Mr. Sai.
Strategic Role in National Development
The Raipur–Visakhapatnam Economic Corridor is part of the Bharatmala Pariyojana, India’s flagship infrastructure initiative to improve national and international connectivity. The tunnel adds strategic value to the corridor, enabling safer, faster, and more efficient travel, particularly through the difficult terrain of the Eastern Ghats.
Officials note that once fully operational, this stretch of the corridor will act as a lifeline for commerce, enabling regional growth, investment opportunities, and easier access to ports in eastern India.
