Why is CRPF Considering Restoration of Lance Naik and Naik Ranks After 30 Years

CRPF is considering restoring Lance Naik and Naik ranks abolished in 1997.

New Delhi: The Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) may restore the lance naik and naik ranks nearly 30 years after they were abolished. The proposal aims to address promotion delays, improve staff morale, and create more career growth opportunities for constables.

According to the reports, the force is considering bringing back these two intermediate ranks to reduce the long wait for promotion. However, the proposal is still under consideration, and the final decision has not yet been announced.

CRPF Promotion Plan: Why Is The CRPF Planning To Restore Two Old Ranks

The CRPF is India’s largest central armed police force, with approximately 3.25 lakh personnel. However, constables reportedly wait an average of 22–25 years for their first promotion.

This long waiting period has reportedly caused dissatisfaction among personnel. Many employees spend several years in the same rank despite their service and experience.

The proposed restoration of lance naik and naik ranks could provide two additional promotion opportunities before a constable reaches the head constable rank. The move is also intended to improve morale and make the force’s promotion structure more effective.

What Are Lance Naik And Naik Ranks

Lance naik and naik are intermediate military ranks traditionally used in the Indian Army. They were also part of the rank structures of the CRPF and the Border Security Force (BSF).

These ranks created additional steps between constable and head constable, allowing personnel to progress gradually during their service.

Under the earlier structure described in the report, a jawan joining as a constable could become a lance naik after five years, a naik after 10 years, and a head constable after 20 years. However, these timelines describe the earlier rank structure and should not be treated as confirmed promotion rules under the proposed system.

Why Were These Ranks Abolished

The Ministry of Home Affairs abolished the lance naik and naik ranks in the CRPF around 1997, nearly three decades ago. Following the change, the ranks were merged into the existing constable and head constable structure. Although lance naik and naik continue to exist in the Indian Army, they have not been part of the CRPF’s regular rank structure since their abolition. The current proposal seeks to reconsider that decision and introduce additional steps in the promotion hierarchy.

How Will CRPF Promotion Plan Affect CRPF Personnel

If approved and implemented, the proposal could bring several changes to the career structure of CRPF personnel.

1. More Promotion Opportunities

Constables could receive additional opportunities for promotion before becoming head constables. This could help reduce the frustration caused by long periods in the same rank.

2. Better Staff Morale

A clearer promotion structure may encourage personnel to remain motivated throughout their service. Recognising experience and service through intermediate ranks could also improve job satisfaction.

3. A More Structured Rank System

The restored ranks could create a more gradual hierarchy between constables and head constables. However, the exact responsibilities and promotion criteria under the proposed structure have not yet been confirmed.

4. Possible Support For New Recruits

Officials have also indicated that the proposal could help attract Agniveers who leave the armed forces after completing their four-year service.

The first batch of Agniveers is expected to complete its service later in 2026 and become eligible to join the Central Armed Police Forces (CAPFs), including the CRPF, subject to the applicable recruitment rules.

CRPF Promotion Plan: Will The New Ranks Guarantee Faster Promotions

Restoring the two ranks would not automatically guarantee promotions within a fixed period.

According to the report, former paramilitary personnel representative Ranbir Singh said the proposal would be useful only if promotions followed a defined timeline.

Without clear promotion rules and implementation, the new ranks might not fully address the existing grievances.

The force would therefore need to establish suitable eligibility conditions, promotion procedures, and timelines for the proposed system to deliver meaningful results.

CRPF Seeks Feedback From Personnel

The CRPF headquarters has reportedly directed hundreds of field formations across the country to collect feedback on the proposal.

The feedback process is expected to take place through stakeholder meetings known as Sainik Sammelans.

Officials said the proposal remains under consideration. The feedback from personnel and field formations may help the authorities evaluate how the proposed ranks could work in practice.

A senior CRPF commander also stressed that restoring the ranks should not be merely a cosmetic change. The revised structure should preserve discipline and support the operational needs of battalions.

The commander reportedly noted that a battalion with more than 1,000 personnel can have over 20 subordinate officers. Any change in the rank structure must therefore account for unit organisation, responsibilities, and operational efficiency.
