Deepak Gupta on Sunday assumed charge as the Chairman and Managing Director (CMD) of GAIL (India) Limited, India’s leading natural gas company, marking a new chapter in the PSU major’s growth and clean energy transition journey.
A Mechanical Engineer from Delhi College of Engineering, Gupta brings over 35 years of rich and diverse experience across the oil and gas value chain. Known for his strategic vision and execution-driven leadership, he has deep expertise in project and construction management, contracts and global procurement, technology selection, business development, and operations and maintenance.
Gupta joined GAIL’s Board as Director (Projects) in February 2022. Since then, he has spearheaded the execution of several high-impact initiatives, including natural gas and LPG pipeline expansions, gas processing units, critical SCADA infrastructure, and green energy projects aligned with India’s Net-Zero goals. He currently oversees the operations and maintenance of GAIL’s vast network of over 20,000 km of natural gas and LPG pipelines, along with compressor stations and process plants.
Under his leadership, GAIL successfully completed the Dabhol Breakwater Project of Konkan LNG Limited, enabling all-weather operations at the LNG terminal. He has also driven multiple digital transformation initiatives aimed at enhancing operational agility and transparency across business verticals.
Gupta has held key leadership roles across several joint ventures. He has served as Chairman of Talcher Fertilizers Limited India’s first coal gasification-based fertilizer complex and as Director on the boards of ONGC Petro-additions Limited and South-East Asia Gas Pipeline Company Limited. He is also the former Chairman of Green Gas Limited and Maharashtra Natural Gas Limited, where he played a pivotal role in strategic planning, governance, and stakeholder alignment.
Before joining GAIL, Gupta spent over three decades at Engineers India Limited, where he led several landmark global and domestic projects. These include the world’s largest single-train refinery project the Dangote Refinery & Petrochemical Complex in Nigeria HMEL’s mega petrochemical complex in Bathinda, and GAIL’s petrochemical expansion at Pata. He also led Mongolia’s first greenfield refinery project, contributing significantly to India’s energy diplomacy efforts.
A respected thought leader and prolific writer, Gupta has authored numerous technical papers on critical engineering packages and fast-tracking project execution. His ideas on digitisation, project acceleration, and operational excellence have been institutionalised as best practices within the organisations he has served.
With his appointment, GAIL is expected to further strengthen its position in India’s evolving energy landscape, particularly in the areas of infrastructure expansion, clean energy adoption, and digital transformation.
