New Delhi: In a major step toward strengthening India’s defence preparedness and advancing the vision of Aatmanirbhar Bharat, the Ministry of Defence has signed defence procurement contracts worth ₹4,666 crore for the acquisition of Close Quarter Battle (CQB) Carbines and Heavy-Weight Torpedoes.
The contracts were formalised in New Delhi in the presence of senior defence officials, underscoring the government’s continued focus on indigenous manufacturing and modernisation of the armed forces.
Details of 4,666 Crore Contracts of Defence Ministry
According to official sources, the contracts aim to significantly enhance the operational capabilities of both the Indian Army and the Indian Navy, replacing outdated systems with state-of-the-art, technologically advanced weaponry.
Out of the total contract value, ₹2,770 crore has been allocated for the procurement of 4 lakh CQB Carbines, while the remaining ₹1,896 crore is dedicated to the acquisition of 48 Heavy-Weight Torpedoes along with associated equipment.
Indigenous CQB Carbines for Army and Navy
The CQB Carbines contract has been awarded to Bharat Forge Limited and PLR Systems Pvt Ltd. These carbines are designed to meet modern battlefield requirements, particularly in close-combat scenarios such as urban warfare, counter-insurgency operations, and special missions.
The induction of CQB Carbines will replace legacy small arms currently in service, providing soldiers with:
- Enhanced lethality and accuracy
- Improved ergonomics and handling
- Compatibility with modern accessories
- Increased reliability in diverse operational environments
The move is expected to significantly improve the effectiveness of frontline troops operating in high-risk and close-engagement situations.
Heavy-Weight Torpedoes for Kalvari-Class Submarines
Another key component of the contracts involves the procurement of Heavy-Weight Torpedoes from WASS Submarine Systems S.R.L., an Italy-based defence manufacturer. The torpedoes will be deployed on the Kalvari-class submarines (Project-75) of the Indian Navy.
These torpedoes are designed to substantially enhance the combat capability of India’s submarine fleet by offering:
- Long-range engagement capability
- High precision targeting
- Advanced guidance and propulsion systems
- Superior underwater combat effectiveness
The acquisition will strengthen India’s maritime deterrence and undersea warfare capabilities in the strategically vital Indian Ocean Region.
Delivery Timeline and Operational Impact
As per the contract terms, deliveries of the Heavy-Weight Torpedoes are scheduled to commence from April 2028, with full completion expected by early 2030. The phased induction will allow seamless integration with existing naval platforms and crew training schedules.
Defence officials noted that the timely completion of these contracts will play a crucial role in maintaining India’s combat readiness amid evolving regional and global security challenges.
