New Delhi: The ATAGS artillery system is gaining international attention as the Armenian Army actively trains with India’s indigenous ATAGS and MArG 155-BR artillery systems.

The development highlights the growing defence partnership between India and Armenia while showcasing the increasing global demand for Indian-made military equipment.

Recent training exercises in Armenia demonstrate how these advanced artillery platforms are being integrated into frontline operations and modern warfare planning.

Combat footage and reports indicate that Armenian forces are actively training with the Advanced Towed Artillery Gun System (ATAGS) and the MArG 155-BR self-propelled artillery system. This marks a significant step beyond procurement and reflects deeper operational integration.

The move comes as Armenia continues modernizing its military following lessons learned from recent regional conflicts and evolving battlefield requirements.

Why Armenia Is Modernizing Its Artillery Force

Military analysts note that modern warfare has exposed the vulnerabilities of traditional artillery systems, especially against drones, precision-guided munitions, and counter-battery attacks.

As a result, Armenia has been investing in more mobile, accurate, and digitally integrated artillery platforms capable of surviving on modern battlefields.

Diversifying Defence Suppliers

Armenia has increasingly turned to India as a defence partner while seeking to diversify its military procurement sources. Over the past few years, India has supplied multiple defence systems to Armenia, including radars, rocket systems, artillery platforms, and air defence equipment.

What Is ATAGS

The Advanced Towed Artillery Gun System (ATAGS) is an indigenous 155mm/52-calibre artillery gun developed by India’s Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) in partnership with Bharat Forge and Tata Advanced Systems. The system is designed to provide long-range precision fire support and is considered one of India’s most advanced artillery projects.

Long-Range Firepower

ATAGS can engage targets at extended ranges using advanced ammunition and modern fire-control technology. The system offers improved accuracy, higher automation, and faster deployment compared with many legacy artillery platforms.

Armenia’s Future Expansion Plans

Armenia reportedly received an initial batch of ATAGS guns and has shown interest in significantly expanding its inventory following successful trials and evaluations. Reports indicate plans for additional purchases in the future.

What Is MArG 155-BR

The Multi-terrain Artillery Gun (MArG) 155-BR is a truck-mounted self-propelled artillery system developed by Kalyani Strategic Systems, a subsidiary of Bharat Forge. Unlike traditional towed guns, the system combines mobility with heavy firepower, allowing rapid deployment across difficult terrain.

Shoot-And-Scoot Capability

One of the biggest advantages of the MArG system is its “shoot-and-scoot” capability. After firing, the vehicle can quickly relocate to a new position, reducing vulnerability to enemy counter-battery attacks and drone surveillance.

Designed For Mountain Warfare

Mounted on a high-mobility truck chassis, the MArG system is suitable for rugged terrain and mountainous regions. This capability is particularly relevant for Armenia’s geography, where mobility can play a crucial role in battlefield effectiveness.

Growing India-Armenia Defence Cooperation

India has emerged as one of Armenia’s key defence suppliers in recent years. Defence cooperation between the two countries now includes artillery systems, Pinaka rocket launchers, Swathi weapon-locating radars, and other advanced military platforms.

Boost For India’s Defence Industry

The successful deployment and training of Indian-made systems abroad strengthens India’s position as a growing exporter of advanced defence technology. Indian defence manufacturers have increasingly secured international contracts as part of the country’s push for defence self-reliance and exports.

Strategic Significance Of India Armenia Defence Cooperation

The Armenian Army’s operational training with ATAGS and MArG artillery systems demonstrates confidence in Indian defence technology.

For Armenia, the systems offer enhanced long-range strike capability, mobility, and survivability.

For India, the deployment serves as an important international showcase for indigenous defence manufacturing and export capabilities.
