New Delhi: Astra Microwave Products Ltd. emerged as the lowest bidder (L1) for the development of Active Antenna Array Units (AAAUs) for four radar prototypes of India’s Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft Programme (AMCA). The development is important because the AAAU forms the heart of the aircraft’s future AESA radar system. If the contract is finalized, it will strengthen India’s indigenous defence ecosystem and support the country’s ambition to field a homegrown fifth-generation stealth fighter.
What Is the AMCA Programme
The Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA) is India’s most ambitious indigenous fighter aircraft project. Being developed by the Aeronautical Development Agency (ADA) with support from DRDO and industry partners, the aircraft is designed to be a stealth-capable, multi-role fighter equipped with advanced sensors, electronic warfare systems, network-centric warfare capabilities, and next-generation weapons.

AMCA Radar AAAU Project: Why Astra Microwave’s Selection Matters
Astra Microwave’s emergence as the L1 bidder is not just another defence contract win. The company has become one of India’s most important private-sector defence electronics firms and already plays a major role in indigenous radar programmes. Astra manufactures AAAUs for the Uttam AESA Radar, which is being integrated into future Tejas Mk-1A fighter aircraft.
Recently, Astra secured a ₹2,205 crore order from HAL for supplying 122 AAAUs and 121 interface frames for the Uttam Radar programme, highlighting the company’s growing expertise in advanced radar manufacturing. Its involvement in the AMCA radar programme therefore represents a natural progression from Tejas radar production to India’s future stealth fighter ecosystem.
BEL Emerges as L2 Bidder
While Astra Microwave emerged as the lowest bidder, Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL) was reportedly placed second (L2). BEL remains one of India’s leading defence electronics companies and has extensive experience in radar production and system integration.
Industry experts believe BEL could still play a significant role during future production, integration, testing, and scaling phases once the radar prototypes are validated.
AMCA Radar AAAU Project: DRDO-LRDE’s Critical Role
The radar development programme is being led by the Electronics and Radar Development Establishment (LRDE) under DRDO. LRDE has already developed several indigenous radar systems, including the Uttam AESA Radar. For AMCA, LRDE is expected to develop a more advanced radar architecture capable of meeting the requirements of a fifth-generation fighter aircraft. The radar must provide:
- Long-range detection.
- Low probability of interception.
- Advanced electronic warfare resistance.
- Simultaneous multi-target engagement capability.
- Seamless integration with stealth operations.
These requirements make the AMCA radar one of India’s most technologically challenging defence projects.
Why This Development Is Strategically Important
The selection of an Indian private-sector company for such a critical subsystem reflects the growing maturity of India’s defence industrial base. For decades, India relied heavily on imported radar technologies and combat aircraft systems. The AMCA programme seeks to change that by creating a fully indigenous ecosystem involving DRDO laboratories, public sector companies, and private defence manufacturers.

Despite the positive development, several challenges remain. The current contract covers only four radar prototypes intended for testing and validation. Before full-scale production begins, the radar will need to undergo:

- Flight trials.
- Environmental qualification.
- Electromagnetic compatibility testing.
- Integration with the AMCA airframe and mission systems.
Only after successful validation can the radar move toward operational deployment.
