From ISR to Strike: DRDO’s Archer-NG UAV Set to Become India’s Next Combat Drone

New Delhi: DRDO Archer-NG UAV is moving beyond surveillance and is now being upgraded into a multi-role combat drone for India. The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) is developing Archer-NG as an indigenous medium-altitude long-endurance (MALE) unmanned aerial vehicle that can support intelligence, surveillance, reconnaissance, and future strike missions. This upgrade is important because it shows India’s push to build home-grown defence systems instead of depending heavily on imports.

What Is DRDO Archer-NG UAV

Archer-NG stands for Archer Next Generation, an indigenous UAV being developed by DRDO. It belongs to the MALE drone category, which means it can fly at medium altitude for a long time and perform missions over a wide area.

According to DRDO-linked material and official partner BEL, Archer is designed for:

  • Intelligence, Surveillance, Target Acquisition and Reconnaissance (ISTAR/ISR)
  • Weapon delivery / armed roles
  • Autonomous take-off and landing
  • Multi-payload operations such as electro-optical sensors and radar payloads

DRDO Archer-NG UAV: What Has Changed in the New Upgrade

The biggest change is Archer-NG’s move from a watch-and-track drone to a watch-and-strike drone.

Earlier role

Archer-NG was mainly being developed for:

  • Border surveillance
  • Tracking enemy movement
  • Gathering battlefield intelligence
  • Monitoring targets for the Army, Air Force, and other forces

New role under upgrade

Now DRDO is pushing Archer-NG toward:

  • Precision strike missions against ground targets
  • Counter-UAV and aerial target engagement capability
  • Multi-role battlefield operations
  • Real-time support in network-centric warfare

In simple words, Archer-NG is no longer being seen as just a “flying camera.” It is being shaped into a drone that can find, track, and eventually hit targets.

What is the Importance of DRDO Archer-NG UAV

It supports defence self-reliance

India wants more indigenous military platforms under the Atmanirbhar Bharat push. A successful armed MALE UAV would reduce dependence on expensive foreign drones in the long run.

It fits modern warfare needs

Recent conflicts have shown that drones are now central to warfare. Militaries want drones that can:

  • Watch the battlefield
  • Identify threats quickly
  • Strike without risking pilots
  • Stay in the air for long hours

It can give India a flexible battlefield tool

If fully developed, Archer-NG could help in:

  • Border surveillance
  • Anti-terror operations
  • Target tracking
  • Artillery support
  • Strike missions
  • Possibly anti-drone roles
