New Delhi: Government of India is planning to speed up indigenous high-end medical devices such as MRI systems, pacemakers, continuous glucose monitoring devices, advanced ultrasound machines and high-end diagnostic analysers.
The move is part of a bigger push to reduce India’s heavy dependence on imported medical equipment and build stronger domestic manufacturing capacity. According to recent reports and official government data, the plan may include tariff reviews, policy support and targeted incentives for manufacturers.
Details of Indigenous High-End Medical Devices
India is considering a plan to fast-track domestic manufacturing of around 10 high-value medical devices. These are devices that hospitals and patients need for diagnosis, monitoring and treatment, but many of them are still largely imported.

What is the Reason Behind Indigenous High-End Medical Devices Production
India’s medical device market is growing fast, but high-end devices are still heavily import-dependent. That creates three big problems:
- High healthcare costs because imported devices are expensive
- Supply risk if global shipments are disrupted
- Weak domestic capability in advanced med-tech manufacturing
A recent government response in Parliament said domestic manufacturing is already being promoted through the PLI Scheme for Promoting Domestic Manufacturing of Medical Devices and through medical device parks with common testing and infrastructure facilities.
The Cabinet-approved National Medical Devices Policy 2023 also aims to strengthen manufacturing, innovation, regulation, skill development and export growth in the sector.
