Bengaluru: HAL Bengaluru launches India’s first satellite-guided landing system for helicopters, marking a major milestone for India’s civil aviation sector. The new Required Navigation Performance – Category H (RNP CAT H) helicopter approach procedure allows helicopters to land and take off with greater precision, even in challenging weather conditions. Developed by the Airports Authority of India (AAI), validated through HAL flight trials, and approved by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), the system is expected to improve flight safety, reduce travel time, and modernise helicopter operations across India.
The new satellite-guided approach has been operationalised at HAL Airport in Bengaluru, making it the first airport in India to introduce this advanced navigation capability for helicopters.
What Is the Indigenous Satellite-Guided Landing System
The newly introduced procedure is called Required Navigation Performance – Category H (RNP CAT H). It enables helicopters to follow highly accurate flight paths using satellite-based navigation instead of depending entirely on conventional ground-based navigation aids.

The system was developed by the Airports Authority of India (AAI), verified through flight trials conducted by Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL), and officially approved by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA).

This improves efficiency while saving fuel and operational costs.

HAL Chairman and Managing Director Ravi K described the operationalisation of India’s first RNP CAT H helicopter approach as a major achievement for the country’s aviation ecosystem.
He said the capability improves the safety, efficiency, and accessibility of helicopter operations and creates a model that can be adopted at airports across India.
