How HAL’s Indigenous Satellite-Guided Landing System Will Transform Helicopter Operations in India

HAL Bengaluru has operationalised India's first satellite-guided landing system for helicopters using the RNP CAT H procedure. The new technology improves flight safety, enables all-weather operations, and cuts helicopter approach time from 12 minutes to about 4 minutes.

Bengaluru: HAL Bengaluru launches India’s first satellite-guided landing system for helicopters, marking a major milestone for India’s civil aviation sector. The new Required Navigation Performance – Category H (RNP CAT H) helicopter approach procedure allows helicopters to land and take off with greater precision, even in challenging weather conditions. Developed by the Airports Authority of India (AAI), validated through HAL flight trials, and approved by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), the system is expected to improve flight safety, reduce travel time, and modernise helicopter operations across India.

The new satellite-guided approach has been operationalised at HAL Airport in Bengaluru, making it the first airport in India to introduce this advanced navigation capability for helicopters.

What Is the Indigenous Satellite-Guided Landing System 

The newly introduced procedure is called Required Navigation Performance – Category H (RNP CAT H). It enables helicopters to follow highly accurate flight paths using satellite-based navigation instead of depending entirely on conventional ground-based navigation aids.

The system was developed by the Airports Authority of India (AAI), verified through flight trials conducted by Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL), and officially approved by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA).

How Does the Indigenous Satellite-Guided Landing System Improve Helicopter Operations

The satellite-guided procedure offers several important advantages:

  • Faster and safer landings.
  • Improved all-weather operations.
  • Better navigation around buildings, hills, and difficult terrain.
  • Higher flight precision.
  • Increased operational efficiency.
  • Reduced pilot workload during approach.

Landing Time Reduced by Nearly Two-Thirds

One of the biggest benefits of the new system is the reduction in approach time. According to HAL, the helicopter approach to HAL Airport has been reduced from around 12 minutes to nearly 4 minutes by using the optimised satellite-guided flight path. This improves efficiency while saving fuel and operational costs.

HAL CMD Calls It a Landmark Achievement

HAL Chairman and Managing Director Ravi K described the operationalisation of India’s first RNP CAT H helicopter approach as a major achievement for the country’s aviation ecosystem.

He said the capability improves the safety, efficiency, and accessibility of helicopter operations and creates a model that can be adopted at airports across India.

Why Is Indigenous Satellite-Guided Landing System Technology Important

Traditional helicopter operations often rely on visual flying conditions or ground-based navigation systems. Satellite-guided navigation enables aircraft to fly precise routes even when visibility is poor, making helicopter operations safer during rain, fog, and other difficult weather conditions.

Built on India’s Modern Satellite Navigation Infrastructure

The new procedure is part of India’s growing adoption of satellite-based aviation navigation technologies. The country’s aviation ecosystem is increasingly using advanced navigation systems such as GAGAN (GPS Aided GEO Augmented Navigation) to improve flight accuracy and reduce dependence on expensive ground infrastructure.

Why Bengaluru’s HAL Airport Was Chosen

HAL Airport handles nearly 50 helicopter movements every day, making it one of the busiest helicopter operation centres in India. Its operational experience made it an ideal location to introduce and validate the country’s first satellite-guided helicopter landing procedure.

What Does This Mean for India

The successful rollout is expected to encourage similar satellite-guided helicopter procedures at airports and heliports across the country. The technology could benefit emergency medical services, disaster response, offshore operations, tourism, corporate aviation, and regional connectivity by making helicopter travel safer and more reliable.
