New Delhi: The HAL Utility Helicopter-Marine (UH-M) prototype is preparing for its maiden flight, expected around November. Developed by Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL), the new helicopter is designed specifically for maritime operations and is intended to meet the future operational requirements of the Indian Navy and Indian Coast Guard.
According to statements made by HAL Chairman and Managing Director Dr. D. K. Sunil and senior HAL officials at various public briefings, the first prototype has been completed and is undergoing final preparations before its inaugural flight. The project represents a major step in strengthening India’s indigenous naval aviation capabilities.
What Is The HAL Utility Helicopter-Marine (UH-M)
The Utility Helicopter-Marine (UH-M) is a twin-engine naval helicopter developed by HAL. It is based on the proven Advanced Light Helicopter (ALH) Dhruv platform but has been extensively redesigned for operations from naval warships.

Unlike conventional utility helicopters, the UH-M has been engineered specifically for challenging maritime conditions, including strong winds, rough seas, and limited deck space aboard naval vessels.
Why Does The Indian Navy Need The HAL Utility Helicopter-Marine
The Indian Navy is looking to expand and modernize its helicopter fleet. The Ministry of Defence issued a Request For Information (RFI) for 76 Naval Utility Helicopters (NUH) to support naval operations. Current plans indicate a requirement for:
- 51 helicopters for the Indian Navy
- 25 helicopters for the Indian Coast Guard
The UH-M has been developed to address these future requirements with an indigenous solution.
Engineered Specifically For Maritime Operations
One of the most important features of the UH-M is its folding rotor system. This allows the helicopter to be stored inside the compact hangars of frigates, destroyers, and other naval vessels. The feature significantly improves operational flexibility and shipboard compatibility.
Enhanced Flight Control Systems
HAL has incorporated upgraded flight-control systems to improve stability and handling during shipborne operations. Landing on a moving warship is among the most demanding tasks for any helicopter pilot.
The advanced control systems are designed to support safer operations in difficult maritime conditions.
More Powerful Engine Performance
The helicopter uses an upgraded version of the Shakti engine family already employed across the ALH Dhruv fleet. The improved engine output helps ensure reliable take-offs and landings even during high winds and adverse weather conditions at sea.
Multi-Mission Capability For Modern Naval Warfare
The UH-M can transport sailors, officers, and mission equipment between ships and shore facilities. This makes it an important asset for routine naval logistics.
Medical Evacuation Operations
The helicopter can be rapidly reconfigured for Medical Evacuation (MEDEVAC) missions. In emergencies, injured personnel can be transported quickly from warships to coastal hospitals for treatment.
Search And Rescue Missions
The aircraft is expected to support maritime search-and-rescue operations. Its ability to operate from naval vessels increases response speed during emergencies at sea.
Surveillance And Utility Roles
The platform can also support maritime surveillance, communication support, and general utility missions, making it a versatile addition to India’s naval aviation inventory.
HAL Utility Helicopter-Marine Project: Leveraging The Proven ALH Dhruv Platform
By building on the ALH Dhruv architecture, HAL can reduce development risks while incorporating new maritime-specific technologies. This approach helps lower costs and speeds up development timelines.
What Happens Next
The first prototype is expected to undertake its maiden flight around November. Successful flight testing will mark the beginning of a comprehensive evaluation programme.
Future Trials
Following initial flights, the helicopter will undergo:
- Performance testing
- Maritime environment trials
- Shipborne operation assessments
- Safety and certification evaluations
These trials will determine its suitability for future induction into the Indian Navy and Coast Guard.
