New Delhi: India Eyes 200 Russian Jets as the country looks to expand regional air connectivity, support smaller airports, and strengthen its civil aviation manufacturing ecosystem.
According to statements from Russia’s United Aircraft Corporation (UAC), Indian airlines have shown interest in acquiring between 100 and 200 Russian-made regional aircraft, including the SJ-100 regional jet and the Il-114-300 turboprop aircraft.
The proposal also includes potential manufacturing and assembly operations in India under the country’s “Make in India” initiative.
Key Highlights of the India 200 Russian Jets Procurement Plan
- India may procure up to 200 Russian regional aircraft.
- Aircraft under consideration include:
- SJ-100 regional jet
- Il-114-300 turboprop
- Discussions include possible licensed production in India.
- Partnership involves Russia’s United Aircraft Corporation (UAC) and India’s Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL).
- The move aims to improve connectivity to smaller cities and underserved routes.

What Did UAC Say?
Vadim Badekha, Head of United Aircraft Corporation, said Indian airlines have expressed significant interest in both the SJ-100 and Il-114-300 aircraft after they were showcased at the Wings India aviation event.
According to UAC, discussions currently involve demand ranging from 100 to 200 aircraft, reflecting India’s growing need for regional and short-haul aviation capacity.
Major Reason Behind India 200 Russian Jets Procurement Plan
India is one of the world’s fastest-growing aviation markets.
Several government initiatives such as:
- UDAN (Regional Connectivity Scheme)
- Airport expansion projects
- Development of tier-2 and tier-3 cities
have increased demand for smaller aircraft capable of operating from regional airports.
Major Challenges in Regional Aviation
- Many routes do not have enough passenger demand for large aircraft.
- Smaller airports have infrastructure limitations.
- Airlines need fuel-efficient aircraft with lower operating costs.
The SJ-100 and Il-114-300 are designed specifically for these regional routes.
Aircraft Under Consideration
SJ-100 Regional Jet
The SJ-100 is a regional passenger jet designed for short- and medium-haul operations.
Key Features
- Around 100-seat capacity
- Suitable for regional routes
- Lower operating costs compared with larger narrow-body aircraft
- Potential for local manufacturing in India through HAL partnership
Il-114-300 Turboprop
The Il-114-300 is a twin-engine turboprop aircraft built for regional connectivity.
Key Features
- Operates efficiently on shorter routes
- Suitable for smaller airports
- Lower fuel consumption
- Designed for challenging operating environments
Make in India Opportunity
One of the most important aspects of the proposal is local manufacturing.
HAL and UAC have already signed agreements related to the production of the SJ-100 in India. If the project progresses, India could see:
- Technology transfer
- Aircraft assembly facilities
- Job creation
- Development of aviation supply chains
- Growth of indigenous aerospace capabilities
This could mark one of India’s most significant civil aviation manufacturing projects in decades.
