New Delhi: The Ministry of Defence (MoD) and Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) are preparing to transfer production technology of the indigenous Astra air-to-air missile family to private Indian companies. 

The move aims to increase production capacity, ensure long-term sustainability through assured orders, and strengthen India’s position in the global defence export market. The initiative aligns with the government’s broader push for self-reliance under the Atmanirbhar Bharat programme.

Details of Astra Missile Technology Transfer to Private Sector 

India is planning a major expansion of the manufacturing ecosystem for the Astra Beyond Visual Range Air-to-Air Missile (BVRAAM).

According to defence industry sources, DRDO and the Ministry of Defence are inviting private companies to participate through a Transfer of Technology (ToT) framework. The objective is to significantly increase missile production capacity while creating a competitive domestic defence manufacturing environment.

Major Policy Shift Approved By Government

The initiative follows a landmark policy decision approved by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh in August 2026. The decision allows wider transfer of DRDO-developed conventional missile technologies to private industry partners.

The policy is expected to accelerate indigenous defence production and reduce dependence on public-sector manufacturing alone.

Astra Missile Technology Transfer: Assured Orders To Encourage Private Investment

Missile production requires large investments in infrastructure, testing facilities, and specialised manufacturing systems. To make participation commercially viable, the government is reportedly considering assured orders and repeat contracts for selected private manufacturers.

This approach is expected to provide long-term business visibility and encourage companies to invest in advanced production facilities.

Focus On Sustainable Manufacturing Ecosystem

Officials believe a stable order pipeline is necessary to build a sustainable defence industrial base. Long-term procurement commitments can help private companies recover investments and continuously upgrade production capabilities.

Astra Missile Family Set For Large-Scale Production

The new ToT framework could open production opportunities for multiple missile systems. These include:

  • Astra Mk1 BVRAAM
  • Astra Mk2 BVRAAM
  • Akash Surface-To-Air Missile
  • Akash-NG Air Defence Missile
  • Rudram Anti-Radiation Missile
  • VSHORADS Air Defence System
  • NASM-SR Missile
  • SANT Anti-Tank Guided Missile
  • Pralay Tactical Ballistic Missile

Strategic systems such as Agni-series missiles and BrahMos remain outside the scope of this programme.

Why Astra Missile Production Is Important

India’s military modernization plans require a significant increase in indigenous missile inventories. The Indian Air Force, Indian Navy, and future export customers are expected to generate growing demand for Astra missiles over the coming years. Expanding production capacity now will help meet both domestic and international requirements.

Growing Export Opportunities

The Astra missile has attracted attention from several countries. In July 2026, India announced plans to supply the Astra missile system to Indonesia.

An agreement was signed between Indonesian defence company Republikorp and Bharat Dynamics Limited (BDL) to support the programme.

Other countries, including Armenia and Brazil, have also reportedly shown interest in integrating Astra missiles into their combat aircraft fleets.

Astra Mk1: India’s Proven Air-To-Air Missile

The Astra Mk1 is India’s first indigenous Beyond Visual Range Air-to-Air Missile. It has an operational range of up to 110 kilometres and has already entered serial production. The missile is currently deployed on Indian Air Force Su-30MKI fighter aircraft.

Integration With More Aircraft

DRDO is actively working on integrating Astra Mk1 with additional platforms. These include:

  • LCA Tejas
  • Indian Navy MiG-29K
  • Other future fighter aircraft

The wider integration will significantly expand the missile’s operational footprint.

Astra Mk2 To Deliver Longer Range And Greater Capability

The Astra Mk2 represents the next generation of India’s indigenous BVRAAM programme. The missile uses a dual-pulse solid rocket motor that improves performance during long-range engagements.

Extended Engagement Range

According to DRDO programme details, Astra Mk2 is expected to engage targets at distances between 160 and 200 kilometres. This would provide a substantial increase in capability over the Astra Mk1.

The missile is expected to become one of the first major defence systems manufactured extensively through private-sector participation under the new framework.

Astra Missile Technology Transfer: Private Industry Expected To Play Bigger Role

India’s defence sector has witnessed growing participation from private companies in recent years. Several major Indian corporations have been identified by industry observers as potential partners for future missile manufacturing projects.

These include companies with experience in aerospace, electronics, precision engineering, and defence systems integration.

The government expects broader private participation to:

  • Increase production rates
  • Improve supply chain resilience
  • Reduce manufacturing bottlenecks
  • Support defence exports
  • Generate high-skilled jobs

The strategy also aligns with India’s long-term goal of becoming a major global defence manufacturing hub.
