Explained: Why India Is Considering the Su-57–S-400 Combo After F-35 Hurdles

India is exploring options to strengthen its air power as challenges surrounding the F-35 continue. Defence experts believe a future Su-57 and S-400 combination could enhance the Indian Air Force's network-centric warfare capabilities, though no official procurement decision has been announced.

New Delhi: Su-57 S-400 combo has emerged as a key topic in India’s search for a fifth-generation fighter aircraft. Reports suggest that delays and challenges linked to the US F-35 have kept Russia’s Su-57 in consideration. While no final decision has been announced by the Government of India, defence experts believe a future Su-57 and S-400 combination could improve the Indian Air Force’s network-centric combat capability.

Su-57–S-400 Combo: India Continues Search for a Fifth-Generation Fighter

The Indian Air Force (IAF) has long highlighted the need for a fifth-generation stealth fighter to maintain its combat edge.

India is simultaneously developing the indigenous Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA), but the project will take several more years before operational induction. This has increased discussions about an interim solution.

Why the F-35 Faces Challenges

The US-made Lockheed Martin F-35 has often been discussed as a possible option for India. However, defence analysts point to several challenges, including technology-sharing concerns, integration issues, and India’s operation of the Russian-made S-400 air defence system. No official agreement has been announced for F-35 procurement.

Russia Continues to Offer the Su-57

Russia has repeatedly offered the Su-57 stealth fighter to India, including proposals for joint production and technology cooperation. Russian President Vladimir Putin recently said Moscow remains willing to involve India in the Su-57 programme and expand defence collaboration.

How the Su-57–S-400 Combo Will Work

The Su-57 is a fifth-generation stealth fighter equipped with advanced sensors and AESA radar. The S-400 Triumf is a long-range air defence system already inducted into the Indian Air Force. Defence experts believe that connecting both platforms through secure data-sharing networks could improve threat detection, target tracking, and battlefield awareness. However, this remains a conceptual operational advantage and has not been officially confirmed by the Indian government.

Potential Benefits of a Network-Centric Force

If integrated successfully, the Su-57 could receive information from ground-based S-400 radar systems before activating its own sensors. This may allow pilots to detect threats earlier, reduce exposure, improve situational awareness, and increase combat effectiveness during complex missions. Such capabilities are part of modern network-centric warfare used by advanced air forces worldwide.

India Is Also Strengthening Air Defence

India continues to expand its overall air defence capability. The Defence Acquisition Council has recently approved additional defence procurement proposals, including more S-400 systems and other equipment to improve the country’s operational readiness.

No Final Decision Yet

Despite growing discussion around the Su-57, the Government of India has not announced any final decision to purchase the aircraft.

The future choice will depend on several factors, including operational requirements, technology transfer, cost, production timelines, and compatibility with India’s long-term defence plans, including the AMCA programme.
