New Delhi: IAF S-400 missile strike has returned to the spotlight after the Indian Air Force (IAF) publicly displayed what it says is physical evidence linked to a record 314-kilometre interception during Operation Sindoor. According to the IAF display, the debris came from an S-400 interceptor missile used in the operation, which reportedly targeted a Pakistani Airborne Early Warning and Control (AEW&C) aircraft. While the display presents the IAF’s account, many operational details remain officially undisclosed.
Details of Evidence of IAF S-400 Missile Strike in Operation Sindoor
The Indian Air Force showcased a circular canister blowout component recovered after the operation. The display included serial markings 40H6.0602792 and 811901, which the accompanying information panel identified as part of the interceptor missile fired during Operation Sindoor.

According to the information displayed by the IAF, the S-400 system, known in Indian service as Sudarshan, successfully neutralised hostile aerial threats during the operation.
What Happened During the Interception
The display states that the interception took place during Operation Sindoor, conducted between 7 and 10 May 2025. According to the displayed information and defence reports, the target was a Pakistan Air Force AEW&C aircraft operating deep inside Pakistani airspace. The reported engagement occurred at a distance of 314 kilometres, making it one of the longest publicly claimed surface-to-air missile interceptions.
Why an AEW&C Aircraft Is Important
An AEW&C aircraft acts as an airborne command and surveillance platform. It detects aircraft, missiles and other aerial threats over long distances and shares real-time information with fighter jets and ground commanders. Because of this role, such aircraft are considered among the most valuable assets in any air force.
About the S-400 System
The S-400 Triumf is a long-range air defence system developed by Russia. India refers to its S-400 system as Sudarshan.
The system is designed to detect, track and engage multiple aerial targets, including fighter aircraft, cruise missiles, ballistic missiles and surveillance aircraft at long ranges. The display states that the interceptor used was the 40N6E long-range missile, which is designed to engage high-value airborne targets under suitable operational conditions.
Operation Sindoor in Context
Operation Sindoor was launched after the Pahalgam terror attack. During the conflict, India targeted terrorist infrastructure, while Pakistan responded with drones, rockets and missiles, according to Indian accounts. The IAF display describes the operation as the first major combat deployment of the Sudarshan (S-400) system and says it helped strengthen India’s layered air defence during the conflict.
