Hyderabad: The UGRAM battle rifle has achieved another important milestone for India’s defence industry. Developed jointly by Hyderabad-based Dvipa Defence and DRDO’s Armament Research and Development Establishment (ARDE), the indigenous 7.62×51 mm rifle was designed in just 100 days. After successfully completing key Army and Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) trials, the rifle is now moving towards procurement by several Central Armed Police Forces (CAPFs).
Indigenous UGRAM Battle Rifle Clears Major Trials
According to Dvipa Defence, the UGRAM rifle has successfully passed Army General Staff Qualitative Requirements (GSQR) trials, extensive field evaluations in different weather conditions, and MHA Board trials.

Following these successful tests, the rifle is now under procurement consideration by forces including the CRPF, ITBP, SSB and NSG.

One of the biggest achievements of the project is its development timeline. Dvipa Defence and ARDE completed the rifle’s design and delivered working prototypes within only 100 days, making it one of India’s fastest indigenous small-arms development programmes.
What are the Features of the Indigenous UGRAM Battle Rifle
The UGRAM battle rifle has been designed for modern military, counter-insurgency and counter-terror operations. Some of its major features include:
- 7.62×51 mm NATO calibre.
- Gas-operated rotating bolt system.
- Weighs less than 4 kg.
- Effective firing range of around 500 metres.
- Ergonomic and modular design.
- Fully indigenous design, manufacturing and testing in India.
Developed to Support Atmanirbhar Bharat
The project supports India’s Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative by reducing dependence on imported small arms. The rifle has been designed specifically to meet the operational requirements of the Indian Armed Forces, paramilitary units and special forces operating in difficult environments.
Dvipa Defence’s Growing Manufacturing Capability
Founded in 2018, Dvipa Defence received its manufacturing licence in 2021 and has established a production facility spread across more than 13 acres in Hyderabad. The company says it has developed over 100 indigenous weapon systems and variants, with UGRAM emerging as its flagship platform. It is also developing assault rifles, carbines, sub-machine guns, light machine guns and anti-drone systems.
