Indian Masterminds Stories

New Delhi: C-DAC indigenous AI inference chip has entered trial production, marking a major milestone for India’s semiconductor industry. The Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (C-DAC), under the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), has partnered with HCL Infosystems to test and validate the chip before commercial launch. This project supports India’s goal of becoming self-reliant in AI chips and advanced semiconductor technology.

What Is C-DAC’s Indigenous AI Inference Chip

The C-DAC indigenous AI inference chip is a processor built to run trained artificial intelligence (AI) models quickly and efficiently. Instead of training AI models, this chip is designed to deliver fast AI results while using less power. It can be used in data centres, healthcare, government services, smart cities, defence, banking, manufacturing, and many other sectors.

Why Is C-DAC Indigenous AI Inference Chip Important

India currently imports most of its advanced AI processors. By developing its own AI inference chip, India can reduce dependence on foreign companies, improve national technology security, and build a stronger domestic semiconductor industry.

The project is also expected to support India’s long-term vision of becoming a global semiconductor hub.

Trial Production Begins With HCL Infosystems

C-DAC has started the trial production of the chip with HCL Infosystems. The company was selected through a government tender to perform design validation, performance testing, and reliability checks.

During this stage, engineers will test how the chip performs under real-world AI workloads before it is approved for commercial use.

How Will This AI Chip Be Used

Once commercial production begins, the chip could power several AI applications, including:

  • Government digital services
  • Healthcare systems
  • Data centres
  • Smart city projects
  • Defence technologies
  • Financial services
  • Industrial automation
  • Cloud computing

Its low-power design makes it suitable for many modern AI applications.

C-DAC Indigenous AI Inference Chip: Part of India’s Semiconductor Mission

The AI inference chip is being developed under the National Supercomputing Mission, while also supporting the government’s larger semiconductor ecosystem. India is investing heavily in semiconductor design, manufacturing, packaging, and research to reduce import dependence and encourage domestic innovation.

The AI chip project is another important step towards Atmanirbhar Bharat and India’s digital future.

About C-DAC

The Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (C-DAC) was established in 1988 under the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY). It is India’s leading organisation for high-performance computing and has developed technologies in supercomputers, artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, healthcare, language computing, and digital governance.

When Will the Chip Be Available?

According to the available information, the production-ready version of the AI inference chip is expected by 2029–2030.

After successful testing, it could be deployed in Indian servers, public sector infrastructure, enterprise AI platforms, and cloud services.
