New Delhi: Thailand considers India’s BrahMos missile as part of its plan to modernise the Royal Thai Navy and improve maritime security in the Indo-Pacific. Although no official purchase agreement has been announced, the reported evaluation highlights Thailand’s focus on strengthening coastal defence while maintaining balanced diplomatic relations with major global powers. The move also reflects India’s growing role as a trusted defence exporter in Southeast Asia.

What Is The BrahMos Missile

The BrahMos missile is a supersonic cruise missile jointly developed by India’s Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and Russia’s NPO Mashinostroyeniya through BrahMos Aerospace. It can attack both land and sea targets with high precision and can be launched from land, ships, submarines, and fighter aircraft. With a speed of nearly Mach 3, BrahMos is among the world’s fastest operational supersonic cruise missiles.

India Thailand Brahmos Deal: Why Is Thailand Interested In The BrahMos Missile

Thailand wants to improve its naval defence and protect important sea routes in the Indo-Pacific. Military experts believe the country’s interest is based on operational requirements rather than politics. Bangkok has traditionally maintained defence cooperation with several countries, including the United States, China, and India, while avoiding dependence on any single supplier.

India Thailand Brahmos Deal: How Would BrahMos Benefit Thailand

If Thailand acquires the BrahMos anti-ship missile, it would provide several strategic advantages:

  • Stronger coastal and maritime defence.
  • Better protection of key shipping routes.
  • Faster response against naval threats.
  • Improved deterrence against hostile warships.
  • Greater operational capability for the Royal Thai Navy.

India’s Defence Exports Continue To Grow

India is expanding its defence exports under the Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative. The Philippines became the first export customer for the BrahMos missile system, while several other countries, including Vietnam, Indonesia, and now Thailand, have shown interest in the missile. This strengthens India’s position as a reliable defence manufacturing partner.

India Thailand Brahmos Deal: India-Thailand Defence Relations Are Growing Stronger

India and Thailand continue to deepen defence cooperation through military exercises, maritime security partnerships, and defence dialogues. During the 10th India-Thailand Defence Dialogue held in Bangkok in June 2026, both countries agreed to expand cooperation in defence manufacturing, military training, technology, and regional security.

Why The Indo-Pacific Region Matters

The Indo-Pacific has become one of the world’s most strategically important regions because of busy international shipping lanes and increasing military competition. Many countries are investing in modern warships, missiles, surveillance systems, and advanced defence technologies to protect their maritime interests. Thailand’s reported interest in BrahMos reflects this broader regional trend.
