The Indian Army paid tribute to the decorated officer, who became the Indian Army’s first wheelchair-borne General after surviving severe injuries during a counter-terrorism operation in Jammu and Kashmir. His inspiring journey continues to motivate soldiers and citizens across India.

The Indian Defence Forces fraternity has expressed deep sorrow over the demise of Major General Sunil Kumar Razdan (Retd.), a recipient of the Kirti Chakra and Vishisht Seva Medal.

Who is Major General Sunil Kumar Razdan

Major General Sunil Kumar Razdan, KC, VSM was a distinguished officer of the Indian Army, renowned for his courage, resilience, and groundbreaking career as the Indian Army’s first wheelchair-bound Major General.  

Early Life & Military Service

  • Birth & Lineage: Born on October 8, 1954, in Shillong (Meghalaya), he belonged to a Kashmiri Pandit family originally from Habakadal, Srinagar. Military service spanned generations in his family, including his father and grandfather.
  • Commission: He was commissioned into the elite 7th Battalion, The Parachute Regiment (7 PARA SF).
  • Reputation: Known for his physical endurance as a long-distance runner (earning the moniker “Greyhound”), he fully embodied the elite paratrooper spirit.

​The 1994 Hostage Rescue & Gallantry

​On the night of October 8, 1994 (his 40th birthday), then Lieutenant Colonel Razdan led a daring counter-terrorist operation in the Damal Hanzipur/Naugam sector of South Kashmir:

  • The Mission: Terrorists had abducted 14 young Kashmiri women and held them captive inside a multi-storey building.
  • The Action: Razdan led from the front, engaging terrorists in close-quarter combat. During the intense firefight, he eliminated two militants before taking point-blank gunshot wounds to the abdomen that severely shattered his spine.
  • Resolve Under Fire: Despite catastrophic injuries, he refused immediate evacuation, continued fighting, neutralized another militant, and ensured all the women were safely rescued.
  • Recognition: For his conspicuous gallantry, he was conferred the Kirti Chakra, India’s second-highest peacetime gallantry award.

​Overcoming Disability & Later Career

​Though the injuries left him paraplegic and permanently reliant on a wheelchair, Maj Gen Razdan refused to let physical limitations curtail his military career.

  • Historic Milestone: In October 2010, through sheer merit and intellectual acumen, he was promoted to the rank of Major General, becoming the first wheelchair-bound two-star general in the history of the Indian Armed Forces.
  • Key Appointments: He served with distinction in key roles, including as Assistant Chief of the Integrated Defence Staff (HQ IDS), contributing heavily to military planning, joint warfare concepts, and strategic research.

Awarded Kirti Chakra For Exceptional Bravery

Even after suffering life-changing injuries, Major General Razdan refused immediate evacuation until the operation was successfully completed. For his extraordinary courage and leadership under fire, he was awarded the Kirti Chakra, India’s second-highest peacetime gallantry award. His actions remain one of the most inspiring examples of bravery in Indian military history.

Becoming India’s First Wheelchair-Borne General

The severe injuries left him paralysed below the waist. However, he refused to let physical limitations define his future. Through determination and resilience, he became the Indian Army’s first wheelchair-borne General, creating history and inspiring countless people.

Continued Service To The Nation

After overcoming immense challenges, Major General Razdan continued serving the country with distinction. He later served at the Headquarters Integrated Defence Staff (HQ IDS), where he contributed through research and staff assignments. His commitment to national service remained unwavering throughout his military career.
