New Delhi: The Indian Army QRSAM missile procurement is set to play a major role in strengthening India’s air defence network as the Indian Army plans to acquire nearly 1,000 Quick Reaction Surface-to-Air Missiles (QRSAM).

The proposed procurement, valued at around ₹11,000–₹12,000 crore, is expected to significantly enhance protection for mechanised formations, military bases, and critical assets against aircraft, helicopters, drones, and other aerial threats. The QRSAM has been developed indigenously by DRDO in partnership with Bharat Dynamics Limited (BDL) and Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL).

Details of Indian Army QRSAM Missile Procurement

The Indian Army is reportedly moving forward with plans to procure around 1,000 QRSAM interceptors under a large-scale air defence modernization effort.

The order is expected to be placed with Bharat Dynamics Limited, India’s leading missile manufacturer. If approved, the acquisition will provide the Army with a substantial stockpile of indigenous air defence missiles for future operational requirements. The procurement reflects the growing importance of layered air defence systems in modern warfare, especially as drone threats and precision-guided weapons become more common on the battlefield.

What Is The QRSAM Missile System

The Quick Reaction Surface-to-Air Missile (QRSAM) is an advanced mobile air defence system developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO).

The missile system is designed to detect, track, and destroy aerial threats while operating alongside fast-moving Army formations. It can perform “search on move,” “track on move,” and “fire on short halt” missions.

What are the Capabilities Of QRSAM Missile

The QRSAM can engage targets at ranges between 5 km and 30 km and can simultaneously engage multiple aerial threats. The system uses advanced AESA radars with 360-degree coverage, active radar seekers, inertial navigation systems, and two-way data links for high-precision interceptions.

Indian Army QRSAM Missile Procurement: Designed For Mobile Warfare

Unlike traditional static air defence systems, QRSAM is mounted on high-mobility vehicles. This allows the missile batteries to move with mechanised and armoured formations, providing continuous protection during offensive and defensive operations.

Why The Indian Army Needs 1,000 QRSAM Missiles

Recent conflicts around the world have highlighted the increasing use of drones, loitering munitions, cruise missiles, and precision-guided weapons. Military planners now consider a strong air defence network essential for protecting troops, logistics hubs, command centres, and strategic infrastructure.

A large missile inventory ensures sustained defensive operations during prolonged military engagements.

Indian Army QRSAM Missile Procurement: Protecting Mechanised Formations

India’s mechanised formations, including tank and infantry combat groups, require air defence cover while moving across the battlefield. QRSAM is specifically designed to accompany these formations and provide rapid protection against enemy aircraft, attack helicopters, and UAVs.

Building A Strong Emergency Reserve

The proposed order would create a significant reserve of ready-to-launch interceptors. Maintaining sufficient missile stocks is increasingly viewed as important as deploying launchers and radars, particularly in scenarios involving repeated drone and missile attacks.

How QRSAM Fits Into India’s Air Defence Shield

QRSAM occupies the short-to-medium-range layer of India’s multi-tiered air defence architecture. It complements longer-range systems such as MRSAM and S-400 while working alongside other indigenous systems like Akash.

Indian Army QRSAM Missile Procurement: Enhancing Layered Defence

Modern air defence relies on multiple defensive layers to intercept threats at different ranges and altitudes. QRSAM strengthens this structure by providing highly mobile protection against low- and medium-altitude aerial threats before they reach critical targets.

Boost For India’s Defence Manufacturing Sector

The proposed contract could become one of the largest missile procurement orders awarded to Bharat Dynamics Limited.Large-scale production would support India’s defence manufacturing ecosystem and strengthen domestic missile production capabilities.

Supporting Aatmanirbhar Bharat

QRSAM is an indigenous system developed using Indian technologies, including radars, command systems, launchers, and missile guidance components. The procurement aligns with India’s broader goal of reducing dependence on foreign defence imports and promoting self-reliance in critical military technologies.

Indian Army QRSAM Missile Procurement: Operational Advantages Of QRSAM

QRSAM is designed to respond quickly to sudden aerial threats. Its advanced sensors and automated command network allow rapid target identification and engagement with minimal reaction time.

360-Degree Battlefield Coverage

The missile system’s advanced radar architecture provides complete surveillance coverage around the protected formation. This allows commanders to monitor and engage threats approaching from multiple directions simultaneously.

High Mobility And Flexibility

Mounted on heavy-duty military vehicles, QRSAM can quickly relocate to changing battlefield positions. This mobility makes it difficult for adversaries to target and destroy the system while ensuring continuous air defence coverage.
