Visakhapatnam: India’s First Fleet Support Ship (FSS-1) will be launched by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh at Hindustan Shipyard Limited (HSL), Visakhapatnam, on October 6, 2026. The event marks a major milestone for India’s indigenous shipbuilding programme and naval modernization efforts. According to the Ministry of Defence, Rajnath Singh will also lay the keel of Fleet Support Ship-5 (FSS-5) and inaugurate the upgraded Slipway-4 and a new 300-tonne Goliath Crane at the shipyard.
FSS-1 Launch is Major Boost For Indigenous Naval Shipbuilding
The launch of FSS-1 is being seen as a significant achievement for India’s defence manufacturing sector.
The ship is the first of five Fleet Support Ships being built for the Indian Navy under an indigenous programme aimed at strengthening the country’s maritime capabilities. The project highlights India’s growing focus on self-reliance in defence production under the Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative.
What Is Fleet Support Ship FSS-1
Fleet Support Ships are large replenishment vessels that provide fuel, ammunition, stores, and logistical support to naval warships while they are deployed at sea. This capability allows warships to remain operational for longer periods without returning to port, significantly extending the Navy’s endurance and operational reach.
Key Features Of FSS-1
FSS-1 is a massive 43,500-tonne vessel designed specifically for the Indian Navy. The ship will enter the waters of the Bay of Bengal just 18 months after steel cutting, demonstrating the rapid progress achieved by Indian shipbuilders.
Keel Laying Of Fleet Support Ship-5
During the ceremony, Rajnath Singh will also lay the keel of Fleet Support Ship-5 (FSS-5). Keel laying is considered one of the most important milestones in ship construction because it marks the formal beginning of a ship’s assembly process.
The keel laying of FSS-5 will demonstrate steady progress toward serial production of the Fleet Support Ship programme.
Upgraded Slipway-4 And 300-Tonne Goliath Crane To Be Inaugurated
The Defence Minister will inaugurate the upgraded Slipway-4 and a newly installed 300-tonne Goliath Crane. These facilities are expected to significantly enhance the shipyard’s heavy shipbuilding capabilities.
Capacity To Build Larger Ships
The upgraded Slipway-4 has a longer platform and improved load-bearing capacity. Supported by the 300-tonne crane, the facility can now build and launch vessels weighing up to 45,000 Deadweight Tonnes (DWT), allowing HSL to undertake larger and more complex shipbuilding projects.
Why FSS-1 Launch Is Important For India
Fleet Support Ships play a critical role in maintaining naval operations across long distances. The new vessels will help the Indian Navy sustain missions throughout the Indian Ocean Region and improve its ability to support deployed warships.
Boost To Defence Manufacturing
The launch of FSS-1 and modernization of HSL infrastructure demonstrate India’s growing capability to design and build advanced naval platforms domestically. The development is expected to strengthen the country’s defence industrial base and reduce dependence on foreign suppliers.
Senior Leaders To Attend Ceremony
The event will be attended by several senior leaders and officials. Among those expected to be present are Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu, Chief of the Naval Staff Admiral Krishna Swaminathan, and Defence Production Secretary Sanjeev Kumar.
