New Delhi: The indigenous SATCOM terminals project has become a major part of the Indian Navy’s modernization plans. The Navy has invited industry participation to develop advanced ship-based satellite communication terminals that will work with the newly launched GSAT-7R satellite. The project aims to improve secure communication, real-time data sharing, and network-centric warfare capabilities across the fleet.

The initiative supports India’s push for self-reliance in defence technology and could significantly strengthen maritime operations across the Indian Ocean Region.

Why The Indian Navy Needs Indigenous SATCOM Terminals

Modern naval warfare depends heavily on secure and uninterrupted communication. Warships, submarines, aircraft, and command centers must exchange information instantly to respond quickly to threats. The Navy believes indigenous SATCOM terminals will help create a stronger and more secure communication network at sea.

The proposed system will allow ships operating thousands of kilometres away from the coastline to maintain secure voice, video, and data links.

What Is The Indigenous SATCOM Terminals Project

The Indian Navy has floated an Expression of Interest (EoI) seeking a domestically developed and industry-funded SATCOM system. The project focuses on creating advanced C-band and Ku-band ship-based terminals that can communicate through the GSAT-7R military satellite.

Indigenous SATCOM Terminals Project: Three Prototype Systems Planned

The programme will begin with the development of three prototypes:

  • Large C-band terminal
  • Large Ku-band terminal
  • Compact Ku-band terminal

After successful testing, the Navy plans to move towards serial production of around 30 units.

How GSAT-7R Will Strengthen Naval Communications

The Indian Navy has been using dedicated military communication satellites since GSAT-7 Rukmini entered service in 2013. That satellite provided a secure communication network for naval operations.

Enhanced Coverage Across The Indian Ocean

The newer GSAT-7R satellite has significantly expanded communication coverage. According to the Navy, the satellite can provide secure connectivity across nearly 2,000 kilometres in the Indian Ocean Region, helping ships remain connected even during long-distance deployments.

What Is Network-Centric Warfare

Network-centric warfare allows different ships, aircraft, sensors, and command centers to operate on a single communication network. Instead of individual platforms fighting separately, all units share information instantly and work together as a coordinated force.

Faster Decisions During Combat

When commanders receive real-time information from multiple sources, they can make faster and more accurate decisions. This improves battlefield awareness and helps forces respond quickly to emerging threats.

Indigenous Content Requirement To Boost Make In India

The Navy has mandated a minimum 50% indigenous content requirement across hardware and embedded software. This move is expected to encourage Indian defence manufacturers, technology startups, and MSMEs to develop advanced military communication technologies within the country.

Companies participating in the project will bear development costs before receiving production orders if the prototypes meet operational requirements.

Indigenous SATCOM Terminals Project: Rigorous Testing Planned Before Deployment

The Navy has established strict testing requirements for the SATCOM terminals. The systems will undergo three-axis motion table testing to simulate ship movements caused by rolling, pitching, and rough sea conditions.

Operational Validation

The terminals will also be evaluated at the Space Applications Centre in Ahmedabad. Additionally, the Navy will conduct vulnerability assessments to ensure the systems remain secure against cyber and electronic warfare threats.

Why Indigenous SATCOM Terminals Project Matters For India

The indigenous SATCOM terminal programme is more than just a communication upgrade. It represents a major step toward self-reliance in military technology while strengthening India’s ability to conduct modern network-centric naval operations across the Indian Ocean Region.

If successful, the project will improve coordination between ships, aircraft, and command centers, giving the Indian Navy greater operational flexibility and situational awareness in future maritime missions.
