New Delhi: The Indian Navy is poised to take a major leap in maritime surveillance and reconnaissance capabilities with the planned induction of advanced MQ-9 high-endurance drones over the next few years, a top naval official confirmed this week.

This development is part of India’s ongoing defence modernisation drive as strategic competition grows in the Indian Ocean Region (IOR) and along its land and maritime borders.

Strategic Defence Upgrade: MQ-9 Drones at the Forefront

During a press interaction on December 18, 2025, Navy Chief Admiral Dinesh K. Tripathi announced that the Indian Navy will receive 31 MQ-9 drones — long-endurance unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) designed to conduct persistent surveillance, intelligence, and reconnaissance missions over vast maritime areas.

Of the 31 drones, 15 will be allocated to the Indian Navy, while eight each are earmarked for the Indian Army and Indian Air Force — reflecting a tri-service approach to enhancing aerial intelligence capabilities.

Their induction is expected within the next three to four years, marking a critical step in strengthening India’s ISR (Intelligence, Surveillance, Reconnaissance) architecture.

The MQ-9 family includes variants such as the SeaGuardian — optimized for naval missions — and the SkyGuardian, capable of operating in both land and maritime theatres.

These drones offer long endurance (up to 40+ hours), high-resolution sensors, and real-time data links, enabling maritime domain awareness across key sea lanes and distant monitoring zones.

Context of Indian Navy MQ-9 drones Acquisition

India’s acquisition of MQ-9 UAVs comes against a backdrop of heightened geopolitical competition in the Indo-Pacific, including China’s expanding naval presence in the Indian Ocean and ongoing border tensions.

Persistent aerial surveillance platforms like the MQ-9 will be crucial in tracking surface movements, undersea activities, and potential incursions.

In recent years, India has already employed leased MQ-9B SeaGuardian drones for maritime surveillance missions — particularly in the waters around the Indian Ocean and Bay of Bengal — underscoring the platform’s value in real-world operations.

Indian Navy MQ-9 drones: Enhancing Joint Capabilities and Indigenous Partnerships

Alongside the MQ-9 procurement, the Indian Navy is collaborating with the Indian Coast Guard to induct medium-range maritime reconnaissance aircraft based on the C-295 platform, a move that underscores New Delhi’s push towards defence self-reliance under the “Make in India” initiative.

The Navy also confirmed ongoing efforts to acquire additional P-8I Poseidon long-range maritime patrol aircraft — vital for anti-submarine and anti-surface operations — along with the recent operationalisation of its second MH-60R Seahawk helicopter squadron (INAS 335 “Ospreys”) at INS Hansa in Goa. These platforms together will significantly bolster India’s ability to monitor and secure critical sea lanes across the Indian Ocean Region.

Indo-US Defence Cooperation: A Broader Partnership

The MQ-9 deal is also emblematic of expanding defence cooperation between India and the United States. Earlier approvals by U.S. authorities cleared potential multi-billion-dollar sales of MQ-9B UAVs to India, facilitating deeper strategic ties.

In addition, arrangements for maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO) facilities within India have been discussed as part of the broader defence industrial collaboration, supporting India’s defence manufacturing ecosystem.

Operational Impact and Future Outlook of Indian Navy MQ-9 drones

Once operational, MQ-9 drones will enhance India’s maritime situational awareness across the Indian Ocean, monitor critical sea lines of communication (SLOCs), and extend sea-based ISR coverage far beyond the horizon.

This persistent aerial oversight will support both peacetime security missions and wartime readiness, helping safeguard national interests and strengthen deterrence against potential adversaries.

As India continues to modernize its armed forces through technology upgrades, joint procurement strategies, and domestic partnerships, the addition of MQ-9 drones marks a significant milestone in transforming the Navy into a more networked, high-tech force ready to meet 21st-century challenges.
