New Delhi: The Retired Il-78 tanker for India has emerged as a potential opportunity to boost the Indian Air Force’s (IAF) aerial refuelling strength. With India facing a shortage of mid-air refuellers and ageing aircraft, reports suggest that a retired Ilyushin Il-78 located in the United States could be repurposed to support India’s defence needs.

This development comes at a time when India is actively modernising its airpower capabilities and seeking immediate solutions to bridge operational gaps.

Why Aerial Refuelling Is Critical for India

Aerial refuelling allows fighter jets to stay longer in the air and operate over long distances without landing. This capability is essential for:

  • Long-range strike missions
  • Border surveillance (China & Pakistan fronts)
  • Rapid deployment during emergencies
  • Sustained combat operations

India currently operates only six Il-78MKI refuellers, which is far below its requirement.

Details of Retired Il-78 Tanker Procurement

The IAF’s existing Il-78 fleet, inducted in the early 2000s, is facing serious challenges:

  • Low serviceability due to spare parts shortages
  • High maintenance costs
  • Limited availability for missions

Reports indicate that these aircraft have struggled with operational readiness for years, impacting India’s combat efficiency.

Retired Il-78 in the US: What Is the Opportunity?

A former Il-78 tanker, now converted into a cargo aircraft, is reportedly available for sale in the United States.

  • The aircraft is currently parked and unused
  • It can potentially be reconfigured back into a refuelling role
  • It offers a faster and cheaper alternative compared to new acquisitions

US-based advisors are actively seeking buyers for this aircraft, opening a window for India to consider it as a stop-gap solution.

How Retired Il-78 Tanker Procurement Could Benefit India

If India acquires and upgrades this retired Il-78, it could:

1. Provide Immediate Capability Boost

Instead of waiting years for new tankers, India could quickly add one more refueller to its fleet.

2. Cost-Effective Solution

Buying and refurbishing an old aircraft is significantly cheaper than purchasing new tanker aircraft worth billions.

3. Operational Flexibility

Even one additional tanker can improve mission planning and reduce strain on existing aircraft.

India’s Long-Term Plan: Moving Beyond Il-78

India is already working on replacing its ageing Il-78 fleet with modern platforms:

  • Approval for six Boeing 767-based tanker aircraft
  • Conversion work to be done by Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI) with HAL participation
  • Expected induction starting around 2030

This move aims to modernise India’s aerial refuelling capabilities and reduce dependence on outdated systems.

Strategic Significance of Retired Il-78 Tanker Procurement for India

India is facing increasing regional security challenges, especially along its northern and western borders. A stronger aerial refuelling fleet can:

  • Extend the reach of fighter jets like Su-30MKI and Rafale
  • Enhance deterrence capability
  • Support multi-front operations

Even a temporary addition like a retired Il-78 could play a meaningful role in strengthening India’s airpower.
