New Delhi: India’s defence sector received a major boost after Larsen & Toubro (L&T) announced a strategic partnership with France-based Exail to deliver an advanced Unmanned Mine Counter Measure Suite for the Indian Navy. The collaboration aims to support the Navy’s upcoming Mine Counter Measure Vessels (MCMVs) programme and improve India’s underwater mine warfare capabilities using autonomous and remotely operated systems.

Details of L&T Exail Deal

L&T and Exail will jointly provide the Indian Navy with a modern unmanned mine counter-measure system capable of:

  • Detecting naval mines
  • Classifying underwater threats
  • Identifying explosive objects
  • Neutralising mines safely from a distance

The system is designed to reduce risks to naval personnel by using stand-off and autonomous technologies.

According to the official announcement, L&T will act as the prime contractor, while Exail will serve as the technology partner for the programme.

L&T Exail Deal: Indian Navy’s 12-Vessel MCMV Programme

The partnership is linked to the Indian Navy’s planned programme for 12 Mine Counter Measure Vessels (MCMVs).

These vessels are specially designed to:

  • Detect underwater mines
  • Clear sea routes for naval and commercial ships
  • Protect ports and strategic maritime zones
  • Improve naval mobility during conflicts

L&T said the unmanned MCM suite will be offered to all shipyards participating in the Navy’s future MCMV programme.

Why Mine Counter Measure Systems Matter

Naval mines remain one of the biggest threats in maritime warfare because they can:

  • Damage warships and submarines
  • Block key shipping lanes
  • Threaten ports and coastal infrastructure
  • Disrupt military and trade operations

Modern navies are increasingly shifting toward unmanned mine warfare systems because they improve safety and operational efficiency.

Exail’s technologies are already operational with several navies globally and have been validated through real-world deployments.

L&T Exail Deal: Technology Behind the Unmanned MCM Suite

The advanced system will include:

  • Autonomous Underwater Vehicles (AUVs)
  • Remotely Operated Vehicles (ROVs)
  • Unmanned Surface Vehicles (USVs)
  • Advanced sonar and detection systems
  • Integrated command-and-control software

These systems work together to create a fully integrated unmanned mine warfare solution.

L&T Exail Deal: Boost for Make in India and Aatmanirbhar Bharat

L&T stated that the collaboration aligns with the Indian government’s:

  • Aatmanirbhar Bharat
  • Make in India

initiatives.

The partnership is expected to strengthen India’s domestic naval defence manufacturing ecosystem and support local industrial collaboration.

Indo-French Defence Cooperation Expands

The agreement also highlights the growing defence relationship between India and France.

India and France already cooperate in several defence areas, including:

  • Fighter aircraft
  • Submarine technology
  • Naval systems
  • Space and aerospace projects

The new L&T-Exail partnership further deepens Indo-French maritime defence cooperation, especially in next-generation naval technologies.

Official Statements

Arun Ramchandani, Senior VP and Head of Precision Engineering & Systems at L&T, said the partnership combines L&T’s defence engineering expertise with Exail’s global leadership in unmanned maritime systems and mine warfare technologies.

Jérôme Bendell, CEO of Maritime Systems Business Line at Exail, said the collaboration reflects a long-term commitment to sovereign unmanned maritime systems in India and future naval drone technologies.

What is the Importance of L&T Exail Deal

Defence analysts believe the collaboration could help India:

  • Modernise naval mine warfare operations
  • Improve maritime security in the Indian Ocean Region
  • Strengthen indigenous defence manufacturing
  • Reduce dependence on imported naval systems
  • Accelerate deployment of autonomous naval technologies

The project also comes at a time when global navies are increasingly investing in unmanned maritime warfare solutions.
