New Delhi: The Su-30MKI fighter jets Virupaksha radar integration is set to become one of India’s most important indigenous defence technologies. Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) has confirmed that 12 new Su-30MKI fighter jets will be delivered to the Indian Air Force by 2029 with advanced Indian-made systems, including the Virupaksha AESA radar and a new electronic warfare suite. The project is expected to strengthen India’s defence self-reliance and improve the combat capabilities of the Su-30MKI fleet.

HAL To Deliver 12 New Su-30MKI Fighters

Details of Su-30MKI Fighter Jets Virupaksha Radar Integration

One of the biggest upgrades in the new fighters will be the Virupaksha Active Electronically Scanned Array (AESA) radar.

The radar is expected to feature around 2,400 Gallium Nitride (GaN) transmit-receive modules (TRMs). GaN technology offers higher power, better efficiency and improved performance compared to older radar systems.

Su-30MKI Fighter Jets Virupaksha Radar Integration: Better Detection And Electronic Warfare Capabilities

The Virupaksha radar is designed to improve target detection range, tracking performance and resistance to enemy jamming. It will help pilots identify and engage threats more effectively in complex combat situations. The radar is also expected to improve overall situational awareness during missions.

New Indigenous Electronic Warfare Suite

The new Su-30MKI aircraft will also receive an advanced indigenous electronic warfare (EW) suite. The system will be capable of detecting, analysing and countering hostile electronic signals. It will include radar warning receivers, jammers and advanced signal-processing capabilities.

Su-30MKI Fighter Jets Virupaksha Radar Integration: Existing Su-30MKI Fleet To Be Upgraded

The modernization effort is not limited to the 12 new aircraft. A broader upgrade programme is planned for the existing Su-30MKI fleet. The upgrades are expected to include new avionics, radars, flight-control systems and infrared search-and-track sensors.

Major Investment In Fleet Modernisation

The order for the 12 aircraft was reportedly signed in December 2024 and is valued at around ₹11,000 crore. In addition, a larger fleet-upgrade programme worth approximately ₹60,000 crore is expected to modernize existing Su-30MKI fighters over the coming years.

Su-30MKI Fighter Jets Virupaksha Radar Integration: Deliveries Scheduled Through 2029

According to HAL, the first deliveries are expected during 2027-28. The remaining aircraft are planned to be delivered by 2029, allowing the Indian Air Force to begin operating upgraded fighters within the next few years.

Why The Virupaksha Radar Matters

The Virupaksha radar represents one of India’s most advanced indigenous radar programmes. The use of GaN-based technology can significantly improve radar performance, increase survivability in contested environments and enhance the Indian Air Force’s operational effectiveness.
