Delhi: Delhi‘s Chief Minister, Rekha Gupta, has approved a major road improvement project aimed at making the capital’s roads pothole-free, smooth, and long-lasting. The ambitious plan includes the redevelopment of over 241 major roads, covering approximately 400 kilometers in more than 45 constituencies across the city. The project, which is set to be completed by the end of 2026, has received significant support from the central government.
Key Features of the Road Revamp Project
The newly approved project will overhaul 241 roads, including vital thoroughfares like the Outer Ring Road, Malviya Nagar’s August Kranti Marg, and Dr. K.N. Katju Marg in Rohini. The project will also focus on strengthening the base layers, improving drainage systems, and ensuring the quality of road surfaces.
Under the “Wall-to-Wall Carpeting” model, roads will be developed with a uniform surface across their entire width, preventing the need for patchwork repairs and ensuring durability. This will also contribute to reducing dust and air pollution levels in the city, which is a growing concern.
Environmental Benefits: Cleaner Air and Less Pollution
One of the main objectives of this project is to reduce airborne particulate matter (PM) that contributes to pollution. Currently, potholes and damaged roads cause dust and fine particles to become airborne, worsening the city’s air quality. With the new construction techniques, these issues will be addressed, and the roads will become less prone to wear and tear, leading to improved air quality in the surrounding areas.
The Role of the Central Government and Funding Details
The project, with a total cost of ₹802.18 crore, is being funded in partnership with the central government. Of this, ₹643.36 crore will be provided through the Central Road Infrastructure Fund (CRIF), while the Delhi government will contribute ₹158.82 crore. This collaboration aims to significantly strengthen the city’s infrastructure and improve the overall road conditions for years to come.
Aiming for Long-Lasting, Safe Roads
CM Rekha Gupta emphasized that this project is not just about temporary repairs but providing long-term solutions for the city’s road network. Each phase of the project will include a thorough examination of the road’s base layer, necessary strengthening, drainage solutions, and final surfacing as per technical standards. This will help prevent flooding during the rainy season and ensure that the roads remain safe and durable in the long term.
A Step Toward Sustainable Urban Development
By focusing on comprehensive road improvements, this initiative is expected to create a more organized and future-ready Delhi. The aim is to have roads that are resilient to wear and tear, provide smoother traffic flow, and reduce accidents, ultimately saving time for commuters and improving the quality of life for residents.

The project will include several key roads across different areas of Delhi, such as:
