Delhi: The Delhi government has announced a major initiative to address long-standing sewer blockages in unauthorized colonies across the city. Under the plan, Decentralized Sewage Treatment Plants (DSTPs) will be constructed at an estimated cost of ₹5,200 crore, benefiting millions of residents and reducing untreated wastewater discharge into the Yamuna River.
Sewer Blockages Affecting Delhi’s Unauthorized Colonies
Delhi has 1,799 unauthorized colonies, and according to government officials, around 22% of these colonies have been struggling with persistent sewer blockages for decades. These blockages have led to overflowing sewage, unhygienic conditions, and environmental concerns, especially the contamination of nearby water bodies.
The DSTP initiative aims to resolve these issues by providing proper sewage water drainage and treatment facilities.
