Delhi: Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta on Thursday laid the foundation stone for a new foot over bridge near Monastery Market and Ladakh Buddha Vihar, adjacent to Kashmere Gate ISBT. The project aims to improve pedestrian safety and facilitate smooth movement in one of the city’s busiest areas.
Addressing the media, the CM highlighted that the area sees high pedestrian and vehicular traffic, creating a pressing need for a safe and efficient crossing. The new bridge will help reduce the risk of accidents and make commuting safer for local residents and visitors alike.
Bridge Designed in Ladakhi Architectural Style
CM Rekha Gupta shared on social media that the bridge will be constructed reflecting Ladakhi architectural elements. In addition, two modern lifts will be installed to ensure easy accessibility for senior citizens, differently-abled people, and daily commuters.
She emphasized that the bridge will not only ensure pedestrian safety but also help maintain smooth traffic flow on the Ring Road, one of Delhi’s key arterial routes.
Long-Pending Demand Fulfilled
The Chief Minister noted that residents of Ladakh Buddha Vihar had been demanding a foot over bridge for many years, but previous governments had not taken action.
“Today we feel proud that this long-pending demand of local residents is being fulfilled in a short span during our government’s tenure,” CM Rekha Gupta said. She added that hundreds of requests had been made to previous administrations, but they were left unaddressed.
Officials Present at the Event
Several dignitaries attended the foundation-laying ceremony, including MP Praveen Khandelwal, Cabinet Associate Parvesh Sahib Singh, and Ladakh BJP State President Tashi Gyalson Khachu. NDMC and local authorities are expected to coordinate for timely completion of the project, ensuring minimal disruption to traffic during construction.
Enhancing Pedestrian Convenience and Urban Safety
The new foot over bridge will significantly benefit local residents, shoppers, and daily commuters by providing a safe crossing over busy roads.
Officials stated that the project reflects Delhi government’s commitment to urban development, public safety, and infrastructure modernization. Once completed, it will serve as a model for integrating cultural aesthetics with functional urban infrastructure, combining safety, accessibility, and local architectural heritage.
Traffic Decongestion and Urban Mobility
With increasing pedestrian traffic near Kashmere Gate ISBT and the surrounding commercial area, the bridge is expected to ease congestion on adjacent streets, streamline traffic flow on the Ring Road, and improve the overall commuting experience.
By addressing both safety and convenience, the project aligns with Delhi’s broader vision of modern, accessible, and culturally integrated urban infrastructure.
