New Delhi: The Delhi government has announced a comprehensive redevelopment plan for Old Delhi, also known as Shahjahanabad, aimed at preserving its historical heritage while transforming it into a major tourism and cultural hub, Chief Minister Rekha Gupta said on Tuesday.
Gupta, who recently assumed charge of the Shahjahanabad Redevelopment Corporation (SRDC), emphasized that reviving the cultural and architectural legacy of the Walled City is a top priority for her administration.
Heritage Conservation at the Core
“Shahjahanabad is not merely a locality but a living symbol of Delhi’s rich history and cultural legacy,” CM Gupta said. She highlighted that the government will conserve historic havelis, katras (traders’ complexes), and koochas (narrow lanes) while upgrading infrastructure to improve urban living.
To enhance the area’s aesthetic appeal and safety, overhead electrical wires in the narrow lanes will be shifted underground, reducing visual clutter and mitigating fire risks.

Traffic and Infrastructure Improvements
Addressing the persistent traffic congestion in Old Delhi’s bustling markets, the government plans to implement a comprehensive traffic management plan. This includes the construction of multi-level parking facilities to ease movement for residents, visitors, and traders alike.
“We aim for balanced development that safeguards heritage while addressing modern urban needs,” Gupta said, underscoring the dual focus on conservation and functionality.
Reviewing Past Redevelopment Projects
The CM stated that previous redevelopment initiatives in the area will be reviewed afresh to ensure cohesive planning. These include:
- Redevelopment of Chandni Chowk’s main road
- Plans for Jama Masjid area
- Beautification of Shyama Prasad Mukherjee Marg
- Road improvement from Delhi Gate to Kashmere Gate
The government aims to ensure that all ongoing and future construction, repair, and maintenance work continues without interruptions.
Old Delhi: A Tourism and Cultural Destination
Shahjahanabad’s narrow lanes, historic markets, and centuries-old architecture represent the heart of Delhi’s history. The redevelopment plan seeks to attract domestic and international tourists, strengthen local businesses, and enhance the area’s global cultural significance.
Chief Minister Gupta concluded, “Our vision is to develop Old Delhi as a world-class heritage and tourism hub, while preserving its soul, culture, and unique urban character for future generations.”
