Delhi: The Delhi government has announced a ₹138 crore sewer development project for the Karawal Nagar Assembly constituency, marking a significant step toward improving basic civic infrastructure in the region.

The announcement was made during a public gathering held on Sunday, where Chief Minister Rekha Gupta and several senior Bharatiya Janata Party leaders were present.

Focus on Sewer Network Expansion and Modernisation

Under the new project, the existing sewer system in Karawal Nagar will be expanded and modernised to address long-standing drainage and sanitation issues.

Officials stated that the scheme will directly benefit thousands of residents by improving:

  • Sewer connectivity
  • Wastewater management
  • Drainage infrastructure

The project is seen as a key step toward strengthening civic amenities in the area.

Coverage Across Key Localities

The ₹138 crore sewer line project will be implemented across multiple colonies, including:

  • Sonia Vihar
  • Milan Garden
  • Chauhan Patti
  • Sabhapur Extension

Authorities confirmed that work on sewer line laying will be carried out on a priority basis in these areas.

300 Crore Worth Development Projects in One Year

Chief Minister Rekha Gupta stated that over the past year, development projects worth more than ₹300 crore have already been approved for the Karawal Nagar constituency.

She added that funding has been allocated through:

  • Chief Minister Development Fund
  • MLA funds
  • Yamuna Par Development Board

The government aims to accelerate infrastructure upgrades in water supply, drainage, roads, and civic services.

Water Supply and Drainage Improvement Plans

Alongside sewer development, the government is also working on:

  • Replacement of old water supply pipelines
  • Mechanical cleaning of old sewer lines
  • Strengthening of drinking water distribution systems

Officials said these measures are aimed at providing a long-term solution to waterlogging and sanitation challenges.

Public Amenities: Aatmanirbhar Services Expansion

The Chief Minister also highlighted additional welfare initiatives in the area, including:

  • Three Atal Canteens providing subsidised meals
  • Approval of three Aarogya Mandirs for improved healthcare access

She also indicated that the demand for a new hospital in the region has been noted and will be considered in future planning.

Opposition to Development Gap Claims and Political Remarks

Delhi BJP President Harsh Malhotra stated that despite being in opposition for several years, the BJP has contributed significantly to Delhi’s infrastructure development through central government projects such as roads, metro expansion, and major civic infrastructure.

Union Minister Pankaj Kumar Singh (as referenced in statements) and other leaders criticized previous administrations for delays in sewer expansion and water management systems.

Large-Scale Sewer Expansion Plan in East Delhi

Water Minister Pravesh Sahib Singh said that nearly 43 km of new sewer lines are being laid in Karawal Nagar colonies, marking what he described as a historic upgrade in sanitation infrastructure.

He added that untreated wastewater had previously contributed to pollution in the Yamuna river, and the new system aims to significantly reduce it.

Wider Development Vision for Karawal Nagar

Delhi MLA and Minister Kapil Mishra stated that approximately ₹150 crore worth of additional development projects have also been launched, including road construction, drainage systems, and electrification improvements.

He emphasized that earlier infrastructure gaps had led to persistent civic challenges, which are now being systematically addressed.

Yamuna Cleaning and Regional Growth Claims

Member of Parliament Manoj Tiwari highlighted broader development initiatives in North-East Delhi, stating that areas like Karawal Nagar, Ghonda, Babarpur, and Mustafabad have seen significant transformation under ongoing infrastructure investments.

He added that improved connectivity and development projects have enhanced the region’s livability.
