New Delhi: After a remarkable career spanning nearly six decades, Dr. U S Awasthi, former Managing Director and CEO of the Indian Farmers Fertiliser Cooperative Limited (IFFCO), has officially retired at the age of 80. Dr. Awasthi stepped down from his role on July 31, 2025, concluding a distinguished 58-year-long journey in the fertilizer sector.
A Stellar Career in Fertilizers and Industry Leadership
Dr. Awasthi began his professional journey in 1967, serving in key positions across major organizations, including Pyrites, Phosphates and Chemicals Limited (PPCL) and Rashtriya Chemicals and Fertilizers Limited (RCF). He spent the last 32 and a half years leading IFFCO, transforming it into a global leader in cooperative fertilizer production. His tenure is widely recognized for operational excellence, strategic leadership, and fostering innovation in the agricultural sector.
Emotive Farewell and Gratitude
In a heartfelt letter to colleagues, farmers, and associates, Dr. Awasthi expressed his deep gratitude for their support throughout his tenure. He wrote, “It has been an honour to serve IFFCO for over 32 and a half years. I am deeply grateful for the unwavering support and cooperation I have received throughout my professional journey.”
He also reflected on the lasting relationships he built over the years, spanning engineers, administrators, and global leaders, emphasizing the personal and professional enrichment these connections brought.

Even after stepping down from formal responsibilities, Dr. Awasthi reaffirmed his dedication to the agricultural community and the nation. “Though I am stepping down from formal responsibilities, I remain committed to serving farmers, cooperators, and the nation, especially in the field of environment protection. My doors are always open for anyone who may need my assistance,” he stated.
