New Delhi: Engineers India Limited (EIL), the state-owned engineering and consultancy major, has announced the successful Mechanical Completion of the Bio Refinery Project of Assam Bio Ethanol Private Limited (ABEPL) in Numaligarh, Assam. The milestone reinforces EIL’s pivotal role in building India’s energy infrastructure.

Pioneering Bio Refinery Development

The Numaligarh project is designed to produce 49,000 TPA of bio ethanol, 11,000 TPA of acetic acid, and 19,000 TPA of furfural from bamboo feedstock. Executed in EPCM mode by EIL, the facility leverages technology from Chempolis OY, transitioning directly from the demo stage.

The achievement marks a historic milestone in EIL’s six-decade journey, expected to set benchmarks for India’s bio-refinery programmes in the coming years.

Inauguration by Prime Minister Modi

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate the facility on September 14 during his Assam visit. Developed by Assam Bio Ethanol Pvt Ltd (ABEPL), a joint venture promoted by Numaligarh Refinery Limited (NRL), the plant will process 3,00,000 tons of bamboo annually.

The refinery will produce nearly 50,000 tons of fuel-grade ethanol, alongside value-added co-products such as furfural, acetic acid, bio-coal, and green energy.

Boost to Ethanol and Green Technologies

The facility will boost ethanol supply for the transport sector and promote wider deployment of technologies for converting by-products into value-added chemicals. This marks a significant leap in India’s pursuit of sustainable energy solutions.

Recent Milestone in Energy Infrastructure

EIL also recently delivered India’s first and largest underground LPG rock cavern for HPCL in Mangalore, with an 80,000 MT storage capacity. As EPCM Consultant, EIL ensured timely execution, safety, and quality compliance.

The first-of-its-kind cavern, excavated beneath existing plant facilities, optimises land use and strengthens India’s LPG storage capacity, further securing the nation’s energy needs.

About EIL

Engineers India Limited (EIL), a Navratna PSU under the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, is India’s premier engineering consultancy and EPC company. With over six decades of expertise, EIL continues to deliver pioneering projects in oil, gas, petrochemicals, and green energy, contributing significantly to India’s energy security and infrastructure development.
