Indian Masterminds Stories

Kolhapur: Engineers India Limited (EIL) has commenced site activities for its Compressed Biogas (CBG) Plant at the MIDC Halkarni Industrial Area in Kolhapur district, Maharashtra. The foundation stone laying ceremony was presided over by Mr. Pankaj Jain, Secretary, Ministry of Petroleum & Natural Gas, in the presence of Ms. Vartika Shukla, C&MD of EIL, board directors, and senior officials of the company.

Project Overview and Capacity

The CBG plant, a self-funded initiative by EIL, is designed to produce 5 tonnes per day (TPD) of Compressed Biogas. The plant will process approximately 125 TPD of press mud, sourced directly from sugar mills and through aggregators, using bio-methanation (anaerobic digestion) technology.

The CBG produced at the plant will be supplied to Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Ltd. (HPCL) and made available for vehicular applications through HPCL retail outlets. This initiative is expected to contribute to reduced carbon emissions and promote the use of renewable fuels in the transport sector.

Sustainable By-products and Circular Economy

In addition to clean gaseous fuel, the project will generate Fermented Organic Manure (FOM) and Liquid Fermented Organic Manure (LFOM) as by-products. These products will support sustainable agricultural practices and contribute to a circular economy, providing farmers with eco-friendly fertilizers while reducing waste.

Strategic Importance and Alignment with National Initiatives

The project reflects EIL’s strategic intent to expand its footprint in sustainable energy infrastructure, complementing its core engineering capabilities. The initiative is aligned with national programs such as SATAT (Sustainable Alternative Towards Affordable Transportation), Atmanirbhar Bharat, and India’s long-term energy transition goals.

By contributing to India’s Waste-to-Energy and Clean Mobility Ecosystem, the project demonstrates EIL’s commitment to driving innovation in the renewable energy sector while supporting environmental sustainability and national energy objectives.
