Former diplomat and Indian Foreign Service (IFS) officer Anil Kumar Trigunayat has been appointed as an Additional Independent Director on the Board of NTPC Ltd., effective April 17, 2025. His tenure will be for one year or until further notice.
NTPC Ltd. (National Thermal Power Corporation) is a central public sector undertaking under the Ministry of Power, Government of India. It is primarily involved in the generation and distribution of electricity to State Electricity Boards across the country.
Notably, 1989 batch IFS officer Trigunayat served as Director General/Joint Secretary of the Gulf & Haj Divisions in the Ministry of External Affairs in New Delhi. He also held the position of Deputy Chief of Mission in the rank of Ambassador at the Embassy of India in Moscow.
Prior to his retirement in May 2016, he held the distinguished posts of Ambassador of India to Jordan and Libya, and High Commissioner to Malta from June 2012 to May 2016.
Mr Trigunayat brings over three decades of strategic, diplomatic, and global economic experience to the board. As a career diplomat, he served India in multiple critical postings, including as Ambassador to Jordan and Libya, and High Commissioner to Malta. His diplomatic journey also took him to key roles in Nigeria, Russia, Sweden, the USA, Bangladesh, Mongolia, and Côte d’Ivoire.

A postgraduate in Physics, he furthered his academic pursuits in Russian history, culture, and language, and conducted research at Oxford University on “WTO and Regional Trading Blocs.” He also served as Trade Commissioner in New York and Deputy Head of Mission in Sweden, Russia, and Nigeria. During his tenure in conflict-affected zones such as Libya and Nigeria, he played a significant role in crisis management and evacuation operations for Indian nationals.
Beyond diplomacy, Trigunayat has remained deeply engaged with public policy, education, economic diplomacy, and strategic affairs. He holds various prestigious positions, including:

- Non-Executive Chairman, Atmanirbhar Global Chamber of Commerce & Industry (AGCCI)

- Adviser, National Cooperative Development Corporation (NCDC)
- Member of international forums like the International Trade Council (Brussels), India-Italy Chamber of Commerce, CII, Asia-Africa Chamber, and BRICS Chamber of Commerce
- Board member of leading think tanks such as Raisina House, USANAS Foundation, and India-Japan Foundation
He also serves as Secretary of the Association of Indian Diplomats (former Ambassadors) and is a TEDx speaker, Peace Ambassador (Unity.Earth, Australia), and Oxford alumnus.
