Chandigarh/Delhi: 1997-batch IPS officer from the AGMUT cadre, Mr Surendra Singh Yadav, the former Director General of Police (DGP) of Chandigarh, has encountered a significant setback after his transfer from Chandigarh to the Border Security Force (BSF) was upheld by the court.
Mr Yadav, who had challenged the orders issued by the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) in court, saw his application for the reversal of the transfer rejected.
The transfer comes after a tumultuous tenure in Chandigarh marked by controversial decisions and growing unrest among UT police personnel.
Mr Yadav had been appointed DGP of Chandigarh in March 2024. His tenure saw significant policy changes, including a landmark transfer of over 2,700 jawans who had been stuck in one location for a long time, a move that made headlines. However, his tenure was also marred by controversies, including allegations of corruption within the UT police force and a viral letter by police personnel expressing frustration with his leadership.
The controversy escalated when a significant number of UT police personnel requested voluntary retirement (VRS) under his leadership, signaling widespread discontent. The police force was also shaken when several personnel were caught in bribery cases, and internal investigations were launched, though some of these cases were later dropped.
Amid the unrest, Yadav’s transfer orders came suddenly late on April 1, 2025, instructing him to report to the BSF headquarters in Delhi as Deputy Inspector General (DIG) for Anti-Naxal Operations. Despite his challenge in court, where he argued against being placed under a junior officer, the court dismissed his appeal. The Home Ministry swiftly moved him from Delhi to Rajasthan for orientation at the IPS Police Academy, before sending him to the Naxal-affected region of Chhattisgarh.
Yadav’s abrupt departure from Chandigarh and the lack of a formal farewell, along with the sudden transfer of his belongings to Delhi, have raised eyebrows. His career now takes him to the challenging anti-Naxal operations in Chhattisgarh, where he will face a new set of responsibilities and challenges.
The circumstances surrounding Yadav’s transfer, especially amid his tumultuous tenure in Chandigarh, continue to attract attention, with many questioning the reasons behind the sudden shift and the lack of clarity on his previous role.
