Indian Masterminds Stories

New Delhi: GAIL (India) Limited has officially commenced construction of its upcoming Research & Development (R&D) Centre with a ground-breaking ceremony at Sector 22, Industrial Model Township (IMT), Sohna, Haryana. The event was led by Chairman & Managing Director Sandeep Kumar Gupta, in the presence of Director (Business Development) Rajeev Kumar Singhal and other senior officials of the company.

The new centre is envisioned as a future-ready innovation hub designed to strengthen GAIL’s technological capabilities in natural gas as well as emerging clean energy sectors.

A World-Class Innovation Hub

Spanning 30 acres, the upcoming R&D Centre will house advanced laboratory infrastructure and pilot-scale facilities, bridging the gap between laboratory research and practical field deployment. The facility, covering approximately 85,000 square metres, will accommodate seven major research verticals:

  • Natural gas pipeline integrity and asset management
  • Natural gas applications and NG/CO₂ valorisation
  • Petrochemicals and polymers
  • Renewables
  • Biotechnology
  • Nanotechnology
  • Advanced analytical sciences

This diverse range of research areas positions the centre to support cutting-edge technological development across both traditional and emerging energy domains.

Advanced Pilot Infrastructure for Industry-Relevant Testing

The facility will be equipped with state-of-the-art pilot infrastructure including:

  • Closed-loop pipeline testing systems
  • Linear pull-through rigs
  • Pilot reactors for polymer development and NG/CO₂ valorisation

These installations will allow GAIL scientists and engineers to validate new processes, materials, and pipeline technologies under realistic industry conditions, enabling faster adoption of innovative solutions in both conventional and clean energy segments.

Driving Indigenous Technology and Energy Transition

The new R&D Centre is expected to strengthen indigenous technology development, foster collaborations with academic institutions, startups, and industry partners, and support India’s broader energy transition goals. By providing a platform for applied research and technology demonstration, the centre aims to position GAIL as a leader in both natural gas innovations and sustainable energy solutions.

About GAIL

Founded in 1984, GAIL (India) Limited is India’s largest state-owned natural gas processing and distribution company. Headquartered in New Delhi, GAIL operates across the entire gas value chain, including exploration, production, transmission, distribution, and marketing.
