Dehradun: In a remarkable move to boost rural development, 40 senior IAS officers in Uttarakhand have adopted the villages where they had their first postings. This initiative, launched under the visionary leadership of Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami, seeks to ensure planned and sustainable development of these remote areas by closely understanding and addressing local challenges.
Adoption of First Posting Villages: A Step Towards Inclusive Growth
The officers are actively engaging with villagers, identifying bottlenecks, and leveraging Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) funds and government schemes to accelerate development. The government has directed these officers to spend time in the villages, including overnight stays, to gain firsthand insight into the issues faced by the communities.
The initiative was formalized through an order issued by Chief Secretary Anand Bardhan on May 20, 2025, aiming to ensure the optimal utilization of development funds and promote comprehensive progress.
Government’s Vision for Sustainable Village Development
Chief Minister Dhami’s goal is to position Uttarakhand among the leading states in India by empowering officers with the responsibility to oversee the holistic development of their adopted villages. Only IAS officers with a grade pay of ₹8,700 or above were entrusted with this duty, emphasizing the importance of experienced leadership in this task.
The government believes that this hands-on approach will help officers design targeted action plans and implement effective solutions that align with local needs, thereby fostering long-term prosperity in rural areas.
A Model for Grassroots Engagement
This program is expected to serve as a model for other states to deepen administrative engagement at the grassroots level and ensure that government schemes reach their intended beneficiaries efficiently.
