New Delhi: The NHAI AI-powered dashcam monitoring system is set to revolutionize highway management in India. The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has announced a major initiative to deploy advanced Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML)-based dashcam systems across nearly 40,000 km of national highways. This move aims to improve road safety, enhance maintenance efficiency, and enable real-time monitoring of highways.

The system will use high-resolution video data and analytics to detect defects, track road conditions, and ensure faster repairs across India’s expanding road network.

What is the NHAI AI-Powered Dashcam Monitoring System

The new system, known as Dashcam Analytics Services (DAS), will use AI and ML technologies to monitor highways more efficiently.

  • Cameras will be installed on Route Patrol Vehicles (RPVs)
  • Weekly surveys will be conducted across highway stretches
  • High-resolution images and videos will be captured for analysis
  • AI models will automatically detect road defects

This system will replace manual inspections with data-driven monitoring, making highway management faster and more accurate.

What are the Features of the NHAI AI-Powered Dashcam Monitoring System

Here are the key features of NHAI AI-powered Dashcam monitoring system;

1. Detection of Road Defects

The AI system can identify over 30 types of defects, including:

  • Potholes
  • Cracks and damaged pavement
  • Rutting and surface wear

This ensures timely repair and better road quality.

2. Monitoring Road Infrastructure

The system will also track road furniture, such as:

  • Lane markings
  • Crash barriers
  • Streetlights

It will detect faded markings and non-functional infrastructure in real time.

3. Focus on Road Safety and Encroachments

AI will help identify safety issues like:

  • Illegal median openings
  • Unauthorized signboards
  • Encroachments and illegal parking

This will improve highway safety and reduce accidents.

4. Night-Time Monitoring

To ensure complete safety checks:

  • Monthly night surveys will be conducted
  • Road lighting, signage, and reflectors will be assessed

This is a major step toward 24/7 highway monitoring.

How the NHAI AI-Powered Dashcam Monitoring System Will Work

  • Dashcams will capture continuous road data
  • AI algorithms will analyze images instantly
  • Data will be uploaded to a centralized system
  • Authorities will receive alerts for defects

The system will also allow comparison of road conditions over time, helping track maintenance progress.

Nationwide Monitoring with Advanced IT Platform

To manage the huge data flow:

  • India will be divided into five monitoring zones
  • A dedicated IT platform will be developed
  • Features will include:
    • Data management
    • AI analytics
    • Visual dashboards

All data will be integrated into the NHAI Data Lake, enabling seamless monitoring and faster decision-making.

What are the Benefits of NHAI AI-Powered Dashcam Monitoring System

This initiative will directly benefit commuters by:

  • Improving road safety
  • Reducing accidents
  • Ensuring faster repairs
  • Providing smoother travel experience

It will also reduce human error and make highway maintenance more efficient and transparent.

Government’s Vision Behind the Initiative

The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways aims to:

  • Modernize highway operations
  • Use technology-driven solutions
  • Improve infrastructure quality
  • Enhance user experience

This step aligns with India’s vision of building smart and safe highways using advanced technologies like AI.
