GRSE’s Cdr Shantanu Bose Awarded ‘Shipbuilding Leader of the Year 2025’ for Boosting India’s Naval Defence Capabilities

Kolkata: Cdr Shantanu Bose, IN (Retd.), Director (Shipbuilding) at Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers Ltd. (GRSE), has been conferred with the prestigious ‘Shipbuilding Leader of the Year’ award at the National Awards for Excellence 2025. The award ceremony was held at Taj Bengal, Kolkata, and recognised his exceptional leadership and pivotal role in advancing India’s shipbuilding and maritime defence capabilities.

Driving Innovation and Self-Reliance in Defence Shipbuilding

Under Cdr Bose’s visionary leadership, GRSE has achieved several significant milestones, strengthening India’s indigenous defence shipbuilding ecosystem. Among the notable projects delivered during his tenure are:

  • INS Himgiri – the first frigate under Project 17A
  • Survey Vessels (Large) – Sandhayak Class
  • ASW Shallow Water Crafts – Arnala Class
  • ‘Dheu’ – India’s first Zero-Emission Electric Ferry

These landmark achievements underscore GRSE’s commitment to innovation, sustainability, and Atmanirbhar Bharat (self-reliant India) in the maritime sector.

Future-Ready Vision and International Expansion

Looking ahead, Cdr Bose is leading strategic efforts to commence construction of five Next Generation Corvettes for the Indian Navy, with the contract expected to be signed shortly. He has also been instrumental in modernising the RBD shipyard, facilitating the construction of 12 Multi-Purpose Vessels for a German client — a significant step in GRSE’s foray into global shipbuilding.

Furthering the vision of “Samudra se Samriddhi” (Prosperity from the Sea), he is currently steering the development of a new shipyard, which is set to expand GRSE’s capabilities and position India as a key player in the global maritime domain.
