GRSE Hosts ‘Sewa Sankalp Abhiyaan’ as Centre Unveils ₹70,000 Crore Shipbuilding Initiatives

Kolkata: Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers (GRSE) Ltd, a Navratna Defence Public Sector Undertaking under the Ministry of Defence, Government of India, hosted the ‘Sewa Sankalp Abhiyaan’ on the occasion of ‘Sewa Diwas’ at GRSE’s Rabindranath Tagore Shipyard in Kolkata on Thursday.

Shantanu Thakur, Minister of State for the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways (MoPSW), attended the event as the Chief Guest.

As part of the campaign, the Minister lit the ‘Aashirvad Ka Diya’ in the presence of Cmde PR Hari, IN (Retd), Chairman and Managing Director, GRSE, Rathendra Raman, Chairman, Syama Prasad Mookerjee Port, Kolkata, Mukesh Mangal, Additional Secretary, MoPSW, and senior officials from GRSE, SMPK, the Directorate General of Maritime Administration, Sagarmala Finance Corporation Ltd. and other participating shipyards from the eastern region.

‘Sewa Sankalp Abhiyaan’ Held at GRSE

The event was organised as part of the ‘Sewa Sankalp Abhiyaan’, which seeks to highlight public service and national development initiatives.

The lighting of the ‘Aashirvad Ka Diya’ formed a key part of the programme at GRSE’s Rabindranath Tagore Shipyard.

Senior representatives from various organisations associated with India’s maritime and shipbuilding sectors participated in the event.

Government Unveils Nearly ₹70,000 Crore Shipbuilding Initiatives

During the programme, officials from the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways presented the Government of India’s initiatives to revitalise the country’s shipbuilding industry.

The schemes have a combined estimated cost of nearly ₹70,000 crore and are aligned with the government’s Maritime Amrit Kaal Vision (MAKV) 2047.

The initiatives are aimed at supporting the development and expansion of India’s shipbuilding ecosystem.

Key areas highlighted during the programme included:

  • Development of India’s shipbuilding industry
  • Strengthening domestic shipbuilding capabilities
  • Supporting the maritime sector
  • Promoting growth of Indian shipyards
  • Aligning shipbuilding development with MAKV 2047

India Targets Top 10 Shipbuilding Position by 2030

Speaking at the event, Minister of State Shantanu Thakur said the day was significant as it marked the 76th birthday of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

He said the ‘Sewa Sankalp Abhiyaan’ seeks to carry forward the journey of 25 years of public service associated with the Prime Minister’s tenure as Chief Minister and Prime Minister.

Thakur also highlighted the government’s long-term objectives for India’s shipbuilding industry.

According to the Minister, India aims to:

  • Rank among the top 10 shipbuilding nations by 2030
  • Become one of the top 5 shipbuilding nations by 2047

These targets are aligned with the broader vision for strengthening India’s maritime and shipbuilding capabilities.

The programme brought together senior officials and representatives from several organisations associated with the maritime sector.
