Gandhinagar: The Gujarat government, led by Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel, has approved the new Atalwadi Yojana aimed at improving rural community infrastructure and enhancing the well-being of villagers across the state.
The decision was taken during the State Cabinet meeting held on May 20, with a focus on providing modern, affordable, and multi-purpose community facilities in villages.
What is Atalwadi Yojana?
The Atalwadi Yojana is a rural development initiative designed to create large, well-equipped community halls in villages. Each Atalwadi facility will have the capacity to accommodate around 500 people, making it suitable for social, cultural, and public events.
According to the Chief Minister’s Office (Chief Minister’s Office, Gujarat), villages with populations above 2,000 will be eligible under the scheme.

Key Features of Atalwadi Facilities
The proposed Atalwadi centres will be developed with modern amenities to ensure convenience and accessibility for rural residents. Key features include:
- Large open hall with arch-shed structure
- Kitchen facility for community use
- Separate toilets for men and women
- Clean drinking water provision
- Space for social, cultural, and religious gatherings
These facilities are designed to serve as multi-purpose community hubs for rural populations.
Affordable Venue for Social and Cultural Events
One of the key objectives of the Atalwadi Yojana is to provide poor and middle-class families with affordable venues for events such as weddings, religious functions, and social gatherings.
By offering facilities within their own villages at lower rental costs, the scheme is expected to significantly reduce financial burden on rural households.
Emergency Use During Natural Disasters
In addition to being social venues, Atalwadi centres will also function as shelter homes during emergencies such as floods, cyclones, and heavy rainfall.
This dual-purpose design aims to strengthen disaster preparedness and provide safe shelter for villagers during crisis situations.
Location and Construction Plan
As per government guidelines, Atalwadi structures will be built on:
- Gram Panchayat open spaces
- Panchayat-approved plots
- Public land near temples or tourist areas
The initiative also emphasizes inclusivity, ensuring that all villagers can access these facilities without discrimination, promoting social harmony and community participation.
₹60 Crore Budget Allocated for the Scheme
The Gujarat government has allocated ₹60 crore in the current financial year for the implementation of the Atalwadi Yojana.
Officials stated that the investment reflects the state’s commitment to rural development, improved living standards, and stronger community infrastructure across villages.
Focus on Rural Development and Community Welfare
The Atalwadi Yojana is expected to play a key role in strengthening rural infrastructure while promoting social unity and economic savings for villagers. By combining community space with emergency utility, the scheme offers a long-term sustainable development model for rural Gujarat.
