Surat: Gujarat Director General of Police (CID Crime and Prisons), Dr K L N Rao (IPS:1992:GJ), visited Lajpore Central Jail in Surat on Thursday to review prison administration, security arrangements and inmate welfare initiatives. During the visit, the senior IPS officer also honoured inmates who successfully cleared the Class 10 and Class 12 board examinations, highlighting the transformative role of education in rehabilitation.
The visit focused on strengthening prison administration, improving rehabilitation programmes and encouraging inmates to pursue education as a pathway towards a better future.
Review of Prison Administration and Security
During his visit, Dr Rao held a detailed meeting with jail officials and staff to assess the prison’s overall functioning.
The discussions focused on:
- Law and order within the prison
- Administrative efficiency
- Security arrangements
- Prison management practices
- Welfare initiatives for inmates
He offered several suggestions to further strengthen administrative processes and ensure smoother functioning of the prison system.
Inspection of Jail Facilities
Following the review meeting, the Director General of Police carried out a comprehensive inspection of various sections of Lajpore Central Jail.
He reviewed the facilities available to inmates, including:

- Rehabilitation initiatives

- Skill and reform-oriented activities
The inspection aimed to assess ongoing efforts to improve correctional administration and inmate rehabilitation.
Certificates Awarded to Inmate Board Exam Toppers
One of the highlights of the visit was the felicitation of inmates who successfully passed the Class 10 and Class 12 board examinations while serving their sentences.
Dr Rao presented certificates to the successful candidates in recognition of their determination, discipline and commitment to education despite challenging circumstances.
According to prison officials, the inmates achieved success through consistent study and a positive approach towards self-improvement during their incarceration.

Addressing the inmates, Dr Rao congratulated the successful candidates and stressed the importance of education in transforming lives.

He said that education and rehabilitation can help individuals rebuild their lives and contribute positively to society after their release.
