Gandhinagar: Gujarat has received three prestigious national recognitions for its performance in organ donation and transplantation, with IKDRC-Ahmedabad, Ahmedabad Civil Hospital and New Civil Hospital, Surat being honoured at the 16th Indian Organ Donation Day (IODD) 2026 ceremony in New Delhi.

The awards were presented on August 3, 2026, during the 16th Indian Organ Donation Day (IODD 2026) ceremony held at the Dr. B. R. Ambedkar International Centre in New Delhi. The achievement was recorded under the guidance of Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel and the leadership of Minister of State for Health Praful Pansheriya.

Three Gujarat Government Hospitals Receive National Awards

The three hospitals received recognition in different categories for their contributions to organ donation and transplantation:

  • IKDRC-Ahmedabad: “Excellence in Leading Government Hospital in Organ Transplantation” Award
  • Ahmedabad Civil Hospital: “Best Non-Transplant Organ Retrieval Centre (NTORC)” Award

IKDRC Performs 597 Organ Transplants in 2025

IKDRC-Ahmedabad, a leading government institution in organ transplantation, performed 597 organ transplants during 2025.

The transplants included:

  • 502 kidney transplants
  • 86 liver transplants
  • 9 pancreas transplants

Of the total beneficiaries, 380 patients received free transplantation under the PM-JAY scheme.

The institution also serves patients from outside Gujarat. According to the state government, around 34% of patients receiving treatment at IKDRC come from other states, highlighting its reputation as a major transplant centre.

Ahmedabad Civil Hospital Retrieves 171 Life-Saving Organs

Ahmedabad Civil Hospital received the national award for its work as a Non-Transplant Organ Retrieval Centre.

During 2025-26, the hospital successfully retrieved:

  • 171 life-saving organs
  • 34 tissues
  • From 48 deceased donors

These donations were made out of 104 reported brain stem death cases.

The organ retrieval efforts helped make donated organs available for patients requiring life-saving transplantation.

Surat Hospital Recognised for Brain Stem Death Team

The New Civil Hospital, Surat received the national “Best Brain Stem Death Team” award.

During 2025-26, the hospital’s team successfully certified 82 brain stem death cases.

The recognition reflects the team’s role in timely identification of brain stem death, counselling of relatives and following scientific procedures to facilitate organ donation.

Gujarat Emerges as a Role Model in Organ Donation

Minister Praful Pansheriya said strong coordination between the Health Department, SOTTO Gujarat and government hospitals, along with advanced technology and the dedication of healthcare professionals, has helped Gujarat strengthen its organ donation ecosystem.

He described the state’s achievements as an example of how coordinated healthcare systems can improve organ donation and transplantation services.

The awards also recognise the contribution of doctors, nurses, technicians, coordinators and other healthcare professionals involved in the process.

Minister Appeals for Greater Awareness on Organ Donation

Pansheriya expressed respect and condolences towards families who chose to donate the organs of their loved ones despite the loss of a family member.

He said such decisions can give a new lease of life to patients awaiting transplants.

The Minister appealed to citizens and doctors across Gujarat to create greater awareness about organ donation and ensure that viable organs from brain-dead donors are not lost due to lack of awareness or timely coordination.

National Recognition on Indian Organ Donation Day

The awards were presented during the 16th Indian Organ Donation Day (IODD 2026) ceremony held in New Delhi on August 3.

The recognition comes as Gujarat continues to strengthen its public healthcare infrastructure and organ donation network, with government hospitals playing an important role in transplantation, organ retrieval and brain stem death certification.
